Why Philippines Remain A Poor Country-00-4922
Philippines, together with Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Korea, just to name a few were considered less developed countries before. But now, all except for the Philippines have changed status, adding them to the list of First World Countries, leaving Philippines behind. In terms of economy, Philippines remained on the bottom list. Below are the possible and most likely reasons:
Corrupt officials - those who are seated to run the Government of the Philippines seemed not to know what they are doing. It appears that they have forgotten what they have promised their people during the election. They are oblivious to the suffering of the people focusing only on their unending wants. All passed bills are not primarily intended for the general welfare. Instead it is focused to serve their insatiable and self serving interest.
Disunited Officials - One senator passes a bill, someone questions it and vice -versa. Once a bill is proposed, it would always be under attack, throwing accusations on the author of the bill and find ways to restrain the bill from being approved. What if the bill's intention ...
... is chaste and uncorrupted? What if its intention is really to improve the living condition of the people especially the impoverished. No proposal is always better for any candidate.
Overqualified but incapable President - Speaking of qualifications, it cannot be doubted and no one can question the knowledge and skills that the current President can offer. A consistent dean's list student of Georgetown University in Washington, where she studied for two years and a graduate of Assumption College as magna cum laude. It is admitted that the 14th President of the Philippines is brainy and brilliant. But speaking of morality and sound judgment, even a 7-year-old elementary student can fairly question her capability to run the Philippines. What with the number of controversies that the President been into, including her immediate family. It is a well-known fact that the President is misusing public funds. It is an open book that the First Family is usurping its power. It is a distinguished fact that the chief of staff of the Philippines is misguided by her own judgment.
Muslim and Christian always on the war path- Private sectors and Businessmen alike are scared of investing in the Philippines for fear of being entangled between bullets. If those businesspersons have not withdrawn putting up business here in the Philippines, thousands of Filipinos could have been given jobs now.
Unemployment Rate- Although unemployment rate have significantly decreased from 2005 to 2008, there was a substantial increase in unemployment rate of 10% from 2008 to 2009. The ratio of people is not always balanced with the number of available jobs.
Brain Drain - Philippines remain a third world country because experts and professionals in different fields like medicine, banking and finance, and legal professions continue to migrate to other affluent places to look for greener pastures. In earlier times, it's mostly doctors and nurses who leave the country for another job. But now, even teachers and plumbers and drivers abandon their posts in search for a better future in other countries, resulting to brain drain of the country. Most of the Philippine's best are no longer Philippines'. It is estimated that there are 11, 000, 000 overseas Filipino workers worldwide equivalent to 11% of the population of the Philippines.
Over population- Based on July 1, 2009 estimates by the Population Division of the United nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Philippines ranked as the 12th most populous country in the world next to Mexico. The figure is estimated to reach 1 million early on 2010. Over population has been a problem ever since and up to date has not been addressed with properly. This problem can also be attributed to lack of education of parents regarding reproductive health and contraception.
Filipino Characteristics - Some Filipino characteristics have contributed to the recent status of the Philippines being a poor country. Mañana Habit (Procrastination) Crab Mentality and Tardiness are just some of the few. To explain:
Mañana habit or procrastination-
Filipinos are accustomed to postponing for tomorrow what can be done today.
Crab Mentality - When someone gets promoted, instead of being happy for one's achievement, people pull them down the ladder of success.
Tardiness - a number of business appointments were cancelled, countless interviews and job opportunities have slipped away, and hundreds of investors have withdrawn their intentions to put up business because of tardiness. Most Filipinos are never conscious of time.
Unless these issues are resolved, Philippines will remain poor. Unless there are good leaders, Philippines will stay pitiable. I hate to say this in my own country but neverthelessthat's what my country is.
