Filmmaking is a challenging and creative task. The process is done on different levels with the help of different kinds of people. The entertainment industry comprises of clear-cut jobs like acting, directing and writing, except for a producer’s job. A producer has the most confusing job, particularly when added with certain titles like associate and executive among others. Aside from taking responsibility for turning creative ideas into concepts that are practical and marketable, they also handle the finance. They find and get studios to fund their projects; and this is where independent filmmakers fall behind – funding.

Unfortunately, the entertainment world is not an even playing field. Some players have deep pockets, like Hollywood studios, while others, such as indie filmmakers, produce films on a micro budget. But social media has now brought together people from diverse backgrounds.

Today, the internet has made more content available, and it can even be accessed wherever, whenever and however we want it. This invention has increased entertainment choices and improved filmmakers’ exposure.

From ...
... press to social media

The modern era has changed the way films are publicized. These days, most films' publicity is generated through social media. In the past, filmmakers and producers relied greatly on word of mouth and press to advertise. Now, they can manipulate the internet with effective social media campaigns to gain traffic, attract attention, and encourage readers to spread or share it across their social networks.

Even filmmakers and producers alike get involved by learning the trends and keeping up with them. As they promote their film, they find ways to generate hype, gain interest, and do every possible thing to connect with their audiences.

More than just publicity

It's not a secret that most, if not all, independent and amateur filmmakers operate on a budget. So, hiring someone to manage online campaigns is not an option. The online world, however, has made it possible for indie filmmakers to generate funds and support. Social media has opened new opportunities for them aside from getting audience's attention.

Crowdfunding is a rising trend with a number of platforms, such as Kickstarter, that helps fund several films. It has proven to be a great asset in sourcing potential customers and growing an audience. A common misconception about crowdfunding is that it’s only for start-ups particularly those with a small budget. In reality, it is useful to both small businesses and more established businesses. For the latter, it could mean funding opportunity they can use to expand their product range. Overall, this practice definitely helps independent filmmakers pursue their projects.

The internet holds a lot of content (legal or otherwise) and offers several new opportunities as well as collaborations. But piracy is also one important issue that comes with technological modernization and it is safe to say that piracy takes a great cut out of the entertainment business. That is why copyright entities promote anti-piracy and offer services to help copyright holders fight for their rights. Copyright protection and social media indeed have a lot to contribute to the industry and the rest of the world.

Copyright Management Services offers copyright protection for several rights holders mainly in the film industry. We pursue those who infringe legal content using our highly sophisticated software tracker.
