Periodontal disease is an infection of that affects tissue around teeth - gums, the cementrum covering the root, the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament. Diabetes

Smoking
Smoking is one of the most important factors that lead to gum disease. Smoking can also make the treatment of gum disease unsuccessful.
Hormonal changes
Changes in secretion of hormones can lead to gums to become sensitive and disease prone.
Genetic causes
Some people are more likely to get gum disease than others.
Medications
Certain prescription medicines can retard the secretion o s salvia temporarily. Saliva protects the moth from the harmful effects of bacteria.
How to keep periodontal disease away?
With practice of oral hygiene and visit a dentist periodically. See your dentist one half a year.
Brushing and flossing
Brush twice a day, and floss every day. This will prevent the buildup of plaque on your teeth in most times.
If you do not take appropriate care as described above, and do not see dentists, plaque is likely to accumulate on the teeth. This reached the beyond gum line below. The bacteria can take shelter easily there because toothbrush cannot reach there. If you do not clean up the plaque, the bacteria grow and the condition can worsen.
