Explore Your Spiritual Self Through These Buddhist Monasteries
A Buddhist kingdom locked between the countries of India and Tibet, Bhutan lies in the valley between the Himalayas. The kingdom is dotted with a number of Buddhist monasteries. Each monastery has their stories and has been beautifully designed. If you wish to explore your inner spirituality, Bhutan is the place to go. Here is a list of popular monasteries you can visit add to your Bhutan package:
Taktsang Dzong
Also called the Tiger’s Nest, the Taktsang Dzong is a prominent Himalayan Buddhist monastery. Legend claims that Guru Rinpoche flew to this location from Tibet on the back of a tigress. The Taktsang Dzong monastery has been blessed and sanctified as one of the most sacred religious sites of Bhutan. Hanging on a cliff above a forest of blue pine in the Paro valley, this monastery must be added to your Bhutan package. Providing some of the most beautiful views of the surrounding valley, you will certainly have no trouble leaving behind your worries and embracing your spirituality.
Punakha ...
... Dzong
Punakha was the old capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The place is home to one of the most imposing monasteries in Bhutan. Its geographically imposing position was taken advantage of with the monastery built as a protective fortress. The monastery was built elaborately in gold, black and red and with its white washed walls it is one of the most beautiful monasteries you can visit in Bhutan. The best time to visit it is during springtime when the jacaranda trees are at their best.
Tango Monastery
Dating back to 1688, the Tango monastery was built in Thimpu over a cave where meditation and miracles were said to take place. Legend claims that the monastery was built in only two months including the six temples inside. One of the best ways to reach the Tango Monastery is by going on a hike. The hike takes roughly an hour and is worth the climb. The inside is breath taking and you can expect the monks to offer you tea and bread to replenish your energy. Currently a university where monks study religious texts, this monastery should be added to your Bhutan package.
Trongsa Dzong
The Trongsa Dzong is the largest dzong fortress built in Bhutan. With a sheer drop in the south this imposing fortress is known to often disappear into the mist. It is now an important administrative building which is the headquarters for the government of the Trongsa district. There are a number of rooms which you can explore to admire the intrinsic beauty of the monastery.
No trip to Bhutan would be complete without exploring its beautiful monasteries. Even if you are not a Buddhist you should try to add these monasteries in your Bhutan packages for a spiritually enlightening holiday experience.
