Hispanics In Denver Finding Their Place
The amenities that many anglo people take for granted is still elusive for many hispanics in the USA. For americans the celebration of the major holidays center around family reunions, family picnics, etc. For many of the nations hispanics this can be a privilege to have parents , brothers and extendend family in one spot during the holidays. The inmigration dilemma plays a big part into this, being able to have all of your family legally is a big hurdle that is difficult to overcome. This prevents major travel between hispanics during the holidays. Other example is the availability of what many americans don't question the existence anymore. such is the case of craigslist, backpage, these are websites that offers free classifieds. The cost is free for everyone, now you will say this also applies to hispanics; while this may hold true this can be intimidating to many spanish speaking people. There has been progress in providing these services such as hispanic classifieds denver area, one of these sites is quepasadenver this is a site that links the spanish speakers to the anglo speakers since it is a bilingual site. ...
... One of the bright spots in Denver CO, is the willingness of the city and state government to accomodate hispanics. One such example is the "Cinco de mayo" holiday, This holiday which literally translates to "may 5", is a celebration of a victory of the mexican army over the french army in the battle of Puebla in 1862. This holiday is one of the most celebrated in Denver, it attracts close to half a million visitors. You have the usual all night parties in every bar across the city, but if you want to really get a taste of this event, drive by Federal blvd. this street is a predominantly hispanic neighborhood, and this is where the mexican culture comes alive.
Another holiday that is celebrated in Denver is "Dia de los Muertos" which translates to "day of the dead", this is a mexican holiday that celebrates beloved family members that have passed away. The celebration calls for family reunions at the cemetery where they are buried. This is more like a family picnic, there's lots of crying and remembering, lots of laughter and lots of food. The dead are honored with bright "coronas" (crowns), these are flower arrangements that are left in the tombs of the dead. As in every society upper classes tend to have pompous celebrations with custom made "coronas" and in some cases even having mariachis to host the event. In the south part of Mexico there's candy made in the form of skulls, skeletons to celebrate. This is one of the holidays where the people of Denver have not been able to replicate. For one the cost to travel to mexico can be very high, other is the legal status of many inmigrants and for those who have their dead buried in US soil, they find anglos have a very detached manner when it comes to their dead and somehow this suppreses the way that hispanics would like to honor their dead. All in all hispanics have understood that moving to a foreing country means giving up some of the natural comforts that comes with living in your own country, but also they have strived to preserve some of those customs that they consider essential to their identity.
