What Causes Jaw Pain?
A nagging jaw pain can be a symptom of a serious condition, and as such should not be ignored. The pain may involve only the area surrounding the jaw joint; however, in some cases, the pain ran radiate to the entire head or neck areas. The pain may become so intense that the sufferer will no longer be able to do anything else but to try and deal with the discomfort. Determining what causes the jaw ache is important because this will in turn dictate which course of action will be taken for long-term pain relief and treatment. A visit to the dentist or doctor will be beneficial in the first step towards getting relief from an aching jaw.
The Causes of Jaw Pain
Misaligned Teeth – Crooked teeth not only affect the appearance of a smile, they can also have a negative effect on the smile’s function. When teeth come together in an abnormal manner, extra pressure is exerted on the teeth, the gums, and the jaw. Jaw joints will eventually get damaged when exposed to constant force resulting from teeth misalignment.
Teeth Grinding – Teeth clenching may ...
... result from teeth misalignment, or may be the result of an unhealthy habit. Some people unconsciously grind their teeth when they are stressed or anxious. Aside from jaw pain, the unconscious grinding of teeth can cause issues with worn enamel, gum problems, and teeth sensitivity.
Jaw Joint Problems - Problems with the jaw joint can be the result of long-term teeth grinding, which can also harm the teeth and gums. The degeneration of the jaw joint may also come from medical problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, especially if the condition is left untreated for a long time. Any injury that involves the jaw area, such as those from playing contact sports, can also contribute to the development of a jaw joint problem.
Jaw Misalignment – Misalignment affects not only the teeth, as it can occur on the jaws as well. This misaligned position may be a condition present from birth, or can be the result of an injury to the jaw area. If the injury is not dealt with soon afterwards, the jaw will eventually cease to work properly with every movement. When the jaw is not aligned properly, a clicking sound can usually be heard when the mouth is opened wide. A person with a misaligned jaw may also experience instances of locking jaw. In some cases, a certain amount of stiffness can be observed when the mouth is opened.
