Why Teak Is So Precious?
Teak has always been a prized material. Teak possesses an abundance of natural oils and qualities that other woods don’t have. The tree that teak comes from, Tectona grandis, is native to the tropics. Since around the 7th century, it has been used to outfit and adorn the residences of the wealthy and powerful [source: AmegaWood]. Teak’s reputation evolved from the Dutch, who colonized Indonesia, and their superior ship building with this quality wood.
However with the surge in popularity in teak indoor and outdoor furniture, prices have increased as supplies dwindle. Teak is now protected timber and all Teak furniture is required to be manufactured from either recycled or plantation timber.
The Indonesian government has a corporation in place dedicated to managing one of the nation’s most valuable natural resources to facilitate a predetermined number of trees that can be felled each year. Each tree is replaced with a new one. This gives protection and ensures the longevity of the rich natural surrounding forests.
Consequently our manufacturers go to great lengths to provide both timbers. Local ...
... teams tirelessly search for old structures and demolished buildings to source the best recycled timbers and be given new life as furniture.
In addition there is always a stable supply of plantation timber, which is certified by Government Officials.
The transformation process
Each step of the process is carefully constructed to maintain the highest quality and care of this prized wood. The first stage of the process begins on arrival where all teak logs are numbered so their supply can be tracked at all times just in case there’s a concern with quality or structure. The tracking system also allows authorities to guarantee it is plantation timber, and all logs are plantation timber certified.
The manufacturer equips seven large kilns which work continuously to dry the timber to its required moisture content, a process that takes almost three weeks with the kilns operating 24 hours a day. The process of timber stacked in the kiln to prepare for drying is manually monitored; every minute, of every day.
The next stage is as meticulous as it is caring with the timber being stacked in organised piles to enable the beginning of manufacturer’s precise method.
The furniture is given an inspection and finishing treatment. Generous time is allowed to ensure the furniture holds no imperfections in its workmanship or timber. Next, the furniture is given a quality control inspection before packaging.
The final stage is simple but thorough: the products are packed carefully before dispatch.
The process, from start to finish, all takes place on one site by a dedicated, passionate team committed to delivering perfection in every piece.
