With more and more work being digital these days, the importance of backing up and transporting files has never been greater. Fortunately technology has kept up with this demand and there are a whole host of ways you can quickly and easily store, transport, edit and access files on the move as well as communicating between different devices. Two of the best systems for doing this are the memory card and using online hosting to store files.

The reason these two have an advantage over other data storage methods is for their portability (memory cards are incredible small and light while files stored online can be accessed from anywhere) as well as their versatility (both memory cards and online files can be utilised by PDAs, netbooks and smart phones as well as PCs). This means that you can work using a memory card or online storage during the commute on your netbook, then continue editing the very same file once you get to work. This is very different from a memory pen, CD or external hard drive which can only be accessed by computer and can be fairly slow and cumbersome to transport.

So memory cards and internet ...
... storage are the two most diverse and easily accessed forms of external data storage. But how do you know which to go for? Well each has pros and cons, and the correct option will depend on your specific needs. Online storage for example will enable the user to access their work anywhere without having to have remembered to bring their memory card. It's impossible to lose your files when they're online so even if you're on a skiing holiday and need something you made two years ago you should be able to access it.

Of course while this is a strength of online storage it is also inherently a weakness as you won't have any chance of accessing anything from your ski lodge if it doesn't have an internet connection while a memory card will work anywhere. At the same time downloading and uploading files to an online host can be a fairly slow process which is particularly annoying if you're paying unreasonable hotel tariffs (and if the connection breaks you'll have to start again).

On the other hand a memory card, if you've had the foresight to bring one, can be accessed quickly and easily with no need for an internet connection. This means you can edit files on the train, in the mountains and anywhere else (and can even save directly onto the card as the transfer is so fast). This is also the cheaper option and doesn't require renewal of any subscription though the size of the storage is smaller as a result.

There are many different sizes and prices with memory cards however so its easy to find one to suit your needs. The SanDisk SD range offers a variety of different cards and go up to 32gb with their SanDisk Extreme range. Cheaper options are old fashioned SanDisk SD cards that go down to 256k making them a great budget choice if you just need one file; or the in between SanDisk Ultra. If you needed more than 32gb meanwhile it would still be affordable to buy multiple SanDisk Extreme cards and fit more than 10 in your wallet without it being a problem.
