What To Do With Your Hd Dvds
Remember the 8-track? Maybe you don't. They were these wacky cartridges that looked like a vinyl album stuck inside a Nintendo game. They're long since past. Vinyl albums are quaint, but going the same way. VHS is pretty much recognized as a bad way to watch movies. Laserdisc never quite caught on. And now that Blu-Ray technology has become the platform of choice to take DvD technology to the next level, HD DvDs are going to join the junk heap of antiquity.
This is, understandably, a difficult fact to accept if you made the mistake of investing in HD-DvDs instead of Blu-Ray over the past few years. But let's face facts: Blu-Ray is the movie platform that won, and HD-DvDs are on their way out. Naturally, if you bought lots of HD-DvDs, the thought of just throwing them away might be a bit soul crushing. Here are a few suggestions for how you might get some use out of them.
Coasters
Just like you used to do with those old AOL CDs that nobody wanted, useless HD-DvDs can still serve some use by keeping your drinks off your table. Nothing says classy like DvD coasters. And you can personalize them depending ...
... on your mood. Use comedy movies when you're having some friends over for drinks, and use romance movies for romance. If you're having an argument with someone, let them know they're in the wrong by serving them a drink on top of "The Unforgiven". Best of all, if you use them shiny-side up, the condensation and water will form rainbows on the HDs. And if you run off to the bathroom, your date can check her makeup in them while you're gone.

Just because you're switching over to Blu-Ray doesn't mean that everyone is up to speed. Some people kept Beta long after VHS had established dominance. Some people will stubbornly hold onto their HD-DvD players for a few more years, refusing to buy a Blu-Ray until they realize that nobody is supporting HD any more. While they slowly have their entire collection obsoleted, you can cheer them up by giving them some your HD DvDs. Just try not to mention that you're getting rid of them because Blu-Ray has much better quality. Nobody likes gifts that come with explanations of why they aren't good. Be nice.
Ninja Weaponry
At some point, almost every man who has ever seen a martial arts film has thought, "It would be cool to be a ninja." Sadly, most of us are not masters of martial arts, do not have an arsenal of deadly throwing weapons, and cannot fling projectiles with incredible accuracy to hurt people. Well, you may not be a ninja, but if you have a stack of old HD-DvDs, you can at least act like one. Put on some black clothes and grab a spindle of old HDs. Walk outside, and spot an enemy tree. (Hint: The first tree you see is your friend. The second one is your enemy.) Swiftly ready your throwing weapon, and flick your wrist lightly as if throwing a small but deadly Frisbee. Use your HD-DvDs as weapons of destruction. Show that foliage who is boss.
Scale Mail Armor
Aside from martial arts experts, many people have also fantasized about being a medieval knight. Again, most of us are not fortunate enough to have a really good set of protective armor, or, well, knighthood. But with a bunch of old HD-DvDs, and a little ingenuity, you can fashion yourself a large protective breastplate of scale mail. You'll need to wire all your old HDs together so they overlap, forming rows where the top half of each HD is covered by the bottom quarter of two different HDs from the row above. The end result will be a suit of scale mail that will provide plenty of defense against an unwanted attack. Invite your HD-ninja friends to toss discs at your chest, and watch them bounce off harmlessly. Peasants.
Tiny Mirrors
The surface of HDs is somewhat reflective, making them usable as disposable mirrors in a pinch. If you need to know your look is okay, but don't want to carry a mirror for fear of seeming vain, then why not pocket an old HD-DvD? Best of all, it's disposable, so you can bring it, check your teeth just before an important meeting, and then throw it away so there's no evidence. Or give it to someone for a coaster.
You can also use the reflective properties of HD-DvDs to fashion a high beam defense grid. We've all been there - you're politely driving down the road when the driver behind you hits his brights inconsiderately. Well, let them know what-for by giving as good as you get. Just attach a few old HD DvDs to a board that you can hold out the window to reflect high beams right back at that jerk behind you. If that doesn't stop the offender from using high beams, you can always break up the HD DvDs and use them as caltrops.
Weaponizing HD-DvDs may seem excessive, but let's face it: Blu-Ray is for watching. HD-DvDs are now for self defense.
