Knowing how to properly use and maintain yard tools will increase their life, help prevent personal injury, and increase your gardening enjoyment. Take your yard hoses for instance if they aren't coiled up correctly it can cause a tripping accident.

If your yard rake is left out, imagine stepping on it and having one of the times go through your foot, or on the other hand having it come up and smack you in the head.

It is very important never to leave any type of tool with points are edges on them hidden in grass or leaves where you can't see them. Keep your fingers away from the blades of the lawn mower: merely smacking your hand against the blades can lead to a brutal injury.

If you have a shovel or a hoe or some other yard tool with a wooden handle that has a small crack in it, you can expect crack pretty easily just by wrapping some black tape around it real tight. It works pretty well and will help it to last quite a bit longer. The tape that is made out of glass filament works pretty well also.

Splinters in wooden handles of rakes, hoes, and shovels can be cured by sanding the face until ...
... it becomes smooth again; this not only protects your hands, but keeps the cracks from spreading and causing the handle to break.

A nice way to preserve a wood handle is to apply several coats of quality lacquer or to paint it. Any parts on the tool that are made out of metal may be painted as well and it is a good idea to use a coat of primer and to exterior coats. There is no need to paint any of the metal parts that are designed to go into the ground though.

Preservation of the tool isn't the only reason you should paint it though as when you paint them appropriate colors it makes them much easier to find. So with this being known, you should make a point to not pait your tools in colors like brown and green, but instead florescent colors and blues, yellow, reds, and such will keep them from getting lost in the grass.

Often times when you actually use your tools, the edges may get nicked or damaged. You can easily fix these nicks by simply using a metal file. If any of the surfaces on the metal parts of your tools have a rough surface a good way to take care of it is by using steel wool or some other type of abrasive.

If they ahve any dents in them, you can easily staighten them out by using a mallet. Prompt attention always needs to be paid to parts on a wheelbarrow that are broken or cracked be they metal or wood parts. You can easily preserve the wood on your wheelbarrow by painting it. Any of the moving parts on your tools should be oiled on a regular basis to keep them operating smoothly.

For winter storage, keep tools in a dry spot as dampness could be harmful. Wipe all tools clean of any dirt or grass before being stored. If you want to prevent rust from forming on your tools, you can apply a mixture of petroleum jelly and light oil before storage.

If you properly take care of your yard tools they will last you for many many years.
Another way to appropriately take care of your tools is to keep them organized. A garage tool organizer is a terrific manner to do this, and you can read more about it by visiting http://gardentoolorganizer.org
