If you would like to get trained on drawing a free, begin your drawing with a basic sketch of branches, trunks (internal structure), and leaves (external structure).

When illustrating trees, the single most essential point is lighting. Examine the light direction and shadow quality in the tree you are drawing and begin a steady pattern of shading the leafy areas.

While drawing, shadowed regions will be darker and will need heavier lines; partially shaded regions require a considerably lighter hand; and portions left white expose highlighted leaves.

Consider using negative area (the sections between branches where there are no leaves) to assist highlight the leafy zones. Slowly deepen the shadowed regions and change shading to effect the impression of individual leaves and the lifelike quality of the tree.

By means of the flat side of a pencil to create broader strokes of different darkness is another procedure used to draw trees and leaves. This technique effects a less definite leaf sample.

Put emphasis on zones by using an eraser to build areas of light. You may also choose to use a random ...
... scribble process, making squiggly lines of different thicknesses to design a less defined tree.

Remember that all of these methods depend on utilizing shadows and light to reveal the impression of clusters of leaves.

How to sketch full forests of trees

Drawing a whole forest of trees is a little bit more intricate, as you don't want to draw each tree individually, but too much evenness will also be not right for the drawing.

The difficulty: We may distinguish trees of similar type as nearly identical but this is not the case. Though same, they are all distinct and should be observed and sketched in a way that illustrates this.

Reading the direction and quality of the light and how it provides character to each tree is the number one point. Even in a packed forest, single trees can be identified. This is the feature that you must include into your drawing.

The easiest way to reveal single trees is to use texture. Consider that each range of tree has leaves that are different as well as mixed ways that the leaves fill up the tree (in bundles or in groupings). As you draw, use different pencil strokes for each type of tree/leaf bundle to give it a unique look.

Yet again, do not fail to remember to take your light source into consideration and shade appropriately. Think about the placement of the trees in your overall landscape. Trees in the forefront should contain be more detailed than those in the middle or background as they can be detected more by the viewer.

These directions should guide you to draw trees - be it entire forests or solo trees.

But wait, knowing these tips and techniques alone won't be of much help for you. Of same importance is: regular practicing! Take your sketchpad, go out and start to draw trees foliage and landscapes. You'll see: every sketch, every drawing of a tree will bring you one step forward. Soon you'll be able to recognize and understand different structures of different trees. And your drawings will look great!
