Aromatherapy Soothes The Body
Aromatherapy is a treatment using different properties of aromatic oils to achieve a healthy life. Aromatherapy oils, known as essential oils, are distilled from specific plants with each plant has having an aromatic fragrance. Aromatherapy soothes the body by using lavender, rose, lemon and peppermint by adding to the bath, massaged into the skin, inhaled or diffused to scent any room in the house.
Aromatherapy History
Aromatherapy has been in practice since the early 1900's but originated from Europe. Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used aromatherapy for medical and spiritual uses. Egyptians used aromatherapy for massage, bathing, and medicine. Greeks learned their knowledge from the Egyptians about healing and relaxation techniques and used herbs and aromatherapy oils for medicines and cosmetics. Hypocrites, the father of medicine, studied about herbs and scented plants and used them to benefit the health of the wealthy. The Romans learned about aromatherapy from the Greeks and later were known for their fragrant baths and scented oil massages. The Roman Empire built a huge data category of over 500 herbal plants! ...
... After the fall of the Roman Empire, aromatherapy was lost for a long time and then Europe started using aromatherapy in the 1920's. Americans started to discover aromatherapy in the1980's. Today, scents and essential oils are used in many cosmetics and medicine.
Uses of Essential Oils
Essential oils are aromatic essences that are concentrated extractions from flowers, plants, leaves, fruits, trees, bark, grasses, roots and seeds that are used in aromatherapy. The basic element for aromatherapy is essential oils. These oils influence your mind, body and spirit by using aromatherapy. There are about 150 kinds of essential oils that are combined together with another substance such as lotion, oil, or alcohol and then applied to you skin, in your bath, sprayed, or inhaled.
Essential oils are used in curing different types of disease and mental conditions such as depression and anxiety. Essential oils can be used in perfumes, sprays, shampoos, soaps, etc. The ten common essential oils include: Thyme, Rosemary, Lemon, Clove, Lavender, Tea Tree, Geranium, Peppermint, Chamomile and Eucalyptus. Essential oils have many uses and many them for the smell alone. Ten essential oils help treat various ailments and illnesses. For example, lavender scent is used to treat depression and anxiety. Rosemary is used to treat arthritis. Juniper oils can be used for ulcers, obesity, and urinary infections but not used if you are pregnant. Jasmine and Rose oils can be used to ease jealously and marjoram and Benzoin can help relax a person who suffers loneliness. Ginger, cedar wood and fennel are very effective in treating fear. Essential oils can treat asthma, infections and are used for skin care.
Aromatherapy is very safe, but it's always recommended to consult with or be under the care of a qualified, licensed, certified practitioner.
Caution in Using Aromatherapy at Home
Remember that essential oils are very concentrated and not to use more than advised. Inhaling certain oils can be dangerous due to their high concentrations. Children who are under five should be careful in using aromatherapy, as they might be sensitive to using the oils. If you have asthma, or another chronic illness or condition, consult with your doctor if it is safe for you to practice aromatherapy. If you have high blood pressure, or are epileptic, it is best ask your doctor if it is safe to practice aromatherapy at home. If you spill any essential oil on your skin, thoroughly wash skin as quickly as possible. Don't apply essential oils close to your eyes, which could cause irritation.
Aromatherapy has been used since the beginning of time for healing, soothing, medicine, in baths, massages, incense and more. Use caution when trying aromatherapy at home. Aromatherapy is used for many purposes and it is best to inform your doctor if it is the right practice for your particular ailment or condition.
