White Fillings
The latest advancements like white filling (also referred to as composite resin filling) is proof dental technology is evolving. Instead of the common metal fillings, most people today prefer white fillings. This is simply because composite filling does not expose their repaired teeth. Some people want to be as discreet as possible in regards to their oral hygiene. Hence, white filling offers the ideal camouflage solution.
What are white fillings?
Composite resin fillings are a combination of plastic tooth-coloured fillings and glass which is used to repair a decaying tooth. White fillings also improve teeth that; have spaces between them, are cracked, chipped, discoloured or misaligned.
How composite resin fillings are placed?
If you have a tooth decay which is not severe; the decay is first removed, cleaned, a bonding agent is poured and then tooth is repaired with a composite resin filling. The filling can be shaped for a proper fit if need be. It’s best if you get a well qualified dentist to do the procedure. You are advised to look for certified Mississauga dental clinics for ...
... a successful white filling procedure.
Are there any advantages and disadvantages of white fillings?
Tooth coloured fillings have several advantages which includes;
Their colour resembles that of natural teeth
Even though they take long when placing them unlike metal fillings, they bond teeth quite well
In case of any damage, they can be repaired easily
They harden immediately
Disadvantages include:-
They are costly than metal fillings
Can also be discoloured by foods and beverages. Also a bad dental hygiene can discolour them and may be prone to wear and tear easily
The materials are not as tough as dental amalgam fillings (commonly referred to as metal fillings).
They don’t work well in molars because the pressure exerted when chewing is too much for them.
Are there composite resin fillings alternatives?
If tooth coloured filling is too expensive for you or it doesn’t suit your needs best; don’t worry there are other effective alternatives you can choose from.
Glass ionomer is one of the alternatives. This material is the weakest among tooth filings. It is best suits teeth where you don’t chew or bite hard.
Porcelain inlays is another alternative. Actually this is the most common material used in tooth coloured filling. The reason being, it’s hard, brittle and lasts longer than composite resin filings. They are made in a dental lab and so far they are strongest material in tooth coloured filling.
Dental Amalgam is the best choice in non tooth coloured filling category. They are less expensive and much stronger than white filling.
