They say that IT Recruitment is cyclical and that it is one of the first sectors to bounce back after a recession and all the signs indicate that we will shortly be leaving our latest one. That leaves the market in an interesting state and one that will create some difficult questions for IT Professionals in the market place.
What is frequently forgotten in economic periods where demand for IT Contract Recruitment Services decreases is that the market as a whole is very robust and has prepared itself well for such instances. When demand for Contract IT Recruitment falls due to the associated costs, this is where it comes into its' own as Clients are able to jettison IT Contractors at relatively short notice compared to their IT Permanent Staff. However, whilst this may cause concern in the IT Contract community, you can be certain that this situation will not last for long!
Where most seasoned IT Contractors will have either made themselves invaluable to their current clients either through their performance so that they weren't deemed surplus to requirements, the others have taken interesting Permanent IT jobs and ...
... will be bidding their time for the next boom period to arrive.
However, when these IT Professionals reach this cross roads, they need to make a decision that is not entirely financially motivated as they may well have a negative effect on those clients that hired them in the first place and leave them with a sour taste when they up and leave for the good times again. Whilst it is indeed a free market - and one which clients have taken advantage of for many years, it's important that IT Professionals take care on what terms they leave their employment as it can come back to haunt them.
There are a few ways in which you can ease the impact of your departure and by following these, you can ensure that you leave with your reputation intact. Firstly, get involved in the Recruitment of your replacement if possible. Secondly, remember that you may need a reference from your employers at some point in the future so make yourself very flexible in terms of notice period. Thirdly, stay in touch with your old Line Manager and lastly, remember that the grass isn't always greener!
