Serums can seem like a great idea in theory, but trying to figure out which one to use often proves baffling! You want one that’s strong enough but not too strong, moisturising but not greasy. And should you use a moisturiser as well? We give you the lowdown on all those questions you always wondered about but never dared to ask

SERUMS ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN CREAMS
The way serums are formulated means that in most cases the active ingredients are more concentrated and more effective than in a typical cream formula.

USE YOUR SERUM IN YOUR DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME ROUTINE
You can’t have too many antioxidants in your routine—nor can you apply them too often. During the day, apply a thin layer of your serum under your broad-spectrum sunscreen to help repair skin and protect it from environmental damage (think UV exposure and air pollution). Then, apply your serum at night (slather it on if you like) to keep a good thing going!

THERE IS NO SINGLE “BEST” SERUM, SO CHOOSE BASED UPON YOUR SKIN TYPE AND CONCERNS
No matter how well formulated a serum, it isn’t right for you if it isn’t ...
... a match for your skin. For example, if you have oily or combination skin, look for a water-light serum that won’t feel heavy or greasy. Likewise, if you have dry skin, you’ll likely love a serum packed with antioxidant rich plant oils!

SERUMS MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN
For many women, the light liquid texture of serums works a treat. For those with drier skin, applying a cream on top of a serum can provide that extra degree of comfort. The great thing about serums is that you can use them under any skin care product.

SERUMS SHOULD BE APPLIED FIRST
Serums are designed to be quickly absorbed into the skin. Applying a cream first would make it harder for your skin to absorb the active ingredients in the serum.

SERUMS CAN BE USED MORE THAN ONCE A DAY
There’s nothing wrong with applying it twice a day – it’s actually a good idea as it makes it that much more effective! The important thing is to choose a serum with a texture and active ingredients that are suited to all skin types. Check that the serum is hypoallergenic and has been tested on sensitive skin.

It has been scientifically proven that active ingredients become gradually more effective over time. Your skin can’t “get used to” the product.

THE MAGIC FORMULA IS “SERUM + CREAM”
An anti-age serum used in conjunction with an anti-age cream can offer better protection.
As the saying goes, two are better than one…
