Online Home-based Businesses

Home based businesses represent a significant proportion of businesses in many economies. For example, in the UK home based businesses represent between 50-60% of all businesses. Such businesses are increasingly making significant use of the internet, either to extend the reach of traditional form of business, or in order to develop purely online businesses, and it is these online home-based businesses or digital home-based businesses that are our particular interest. As our research has begun to demonstrate, the characteristics of online home-based businesses allow almost unique opportunities to entrepreneurs, particularly to experiment, innovate and undertake ‘learning by doing. This unique set of characteristics also attracts individuals who would not become entrepreneurs otherwise, opening the social and economic opportunities offered by entrepreneurship to be open to a wider group of individuals.
A business entity operated by a self-employed person working either at home or from home and who is using the internet to carry out a significant proportion of business activities that may include sourcing, selling, ...
... providing services and communicating with stakeholders. The business may be operated full or part-time. Online home-based businesses include: producers making and selling items, entrepreneurs acting as resellers, web designers, digital marking agents and online communities and portals.
Previous research has found immigration to be associated with higher levels of business start-up and entrepreneurship than those that are life-long UK residents. However, there are certain caveats to this increased entrepreneurship. Many immigrant business start-ups are confined to certain sectors, such as restaurants, catering and retail, which often involve low margins and long working hours. Start-up firms are often limited to certain geographic regions, limiting the customer base and resource acquisition opportunities. Research has also found that certain ethnic groups, particularly black and Asian, have a reduced incidence of entrepreneurship for the first few years after they arrive in the UK compared to other immigrants, suggesting that they find it more difficult than other groups apply their entrepreneurial skills and harness opportunities.
The study will extend earlier work undertaken with UK based online home-based entrepreneurs. This new stage of the study will explore the opportunities offered by online home-based to entrepreneurs based in the UK who moved here from overseas.Such work has not been embraced before and the study is all that much an early stage exploratory study. Interviews with business visionaries who have moved to the UK are at present being attempted to investigate the advantages and difficulties offered by online home based organizations. Home-based businesses allow business owners to earn an income while saving on travelling costs and daycare. Selling items from house can be successful if there is popular demand for the item. Some salesmen create home made goods, while others re-sell used or general items. The right item, along with efficient organization and personal effective time management, can help you be successful as you offer items from house.
