If you are heading to the Big Apple, that well known city of over 8 million people - New York, New York -, there are plenty of "can't miss" experiences. In fact, there are so many experiences that it's a foregone conclusion you'll have to go back to do them all. Since you can't really "learn" New York in one day, here's a brief list of "can't miss" experiences every visitor should enjoy:

1. Forget about the car for a bit. You can't miss out on the chance to use the double-decker tour buses. They may not be the quickest way to get around, but you get to find out a lot about the Big Apple, and you get to see all the city's high points. Most give you 48 hours of hop-on, hop-off service and a night tour to see the city lights. Once you get the experience, you can go back to using the car, subway or cab.

2. Use a cab at least once. New York is the only place you can get a twenty-minute frantic tour of the city when you just wanted to go someplace five minutes away. It's unforgettable! The half-hazard joy ride is a can't miss.

3. Visit the Statue of Liberty and the NYC Waterfalls via the Staten Island Ferry. While ...
... you could stand in line, buy tickets and get pushed around by other tourists, the Ferry is free and takes you past a lot of attractions that you might otherwise not have time to see.

4. Tour the institutions in the Cultural Institutions Group; the American Museum of Natural History, the Met, the Empire State Building, the Central Park Zoo and 30 other museums, gardens and zoos are in the Group. Culture, history and fun are all rolled into a fantastic package you can't miss out on.

5. Visit the Empire State Building just to see it. If you want to see the Manhattan skyline, however, take a round trip through the rooftop bars and lounges of the New York Hotels. Rest, relax, sip a few drinks and enjoy the view!

6. Broadway shows are great to see, but the off Broadway shows are a can't miss experience. The performances are relaxed, experimental and edgy. You get to enjoy an excellent show for half the price of Broadway, the restaurants are less crowded and the experience is absolutely unforgettable.

7. Get around by foot for a while and enjoy the true hustle and bustle of New York. There is no city quite like it! Just don't stop at a corner to look up; it slows the crowd down.

8. Take a Trip to Macy's Herald Square for a little bit of shopping. You may have a Macy's where you're at, but the New York version is a unique experience. One million square feet of space, nine floors and eight restaurants - not to mention entire floors for a single department - are guaranteed to keep you grinning, gawking and spending.

9. Stop at the upscale, exclusive 5th Avenue shops, such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and FAO Schwartz. You may not make a lot of purchases ($2400 for a black jacket, $900 for a sun dress), but it's a great opportunity to see what "upscale" really means. At FAO Schwartz, a toy store, the doormen dress up as toy soldiers. There's a life-size Lego Batman, a huge candy department and a giant keyboard like the one from the Tom Hanks movie, Big, that you can dance on. It's a time-out for the adults and the chance to be a kid.

10. Shop in Chinatown, where haggling over the prices is expected and designer knock-offs are par for the course. While there, or in neighboring little Italy, visit the restaurants for a real treat of great cuisine. Some of the restaurants have been in business over 100 years and are great places to really enjoy a meal.

These are just a few of the "can't miss" experiences in the Big Apple. Times Square, the Grand Central Market, the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, the Rockefeller Center, Ground Zero, the Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Park are more great places to see.

Once you get to the Big Apple, be prepared to be busy - there's a lot to do, see, buy and experience. Bring an extra suitcase for all the souvenirs you'll be taking home, and plan to come back again for the next round!
