Flu activity is now widespread across the United States. Visits to doctors nationwide for influenza-like-symptoms are increasing steeply and are already higher than what is usually seen at the peak of the regular flu season. As flu-related hospitalizations and deaths continue to rise nationwide, it is more important than ever to proactively prevent you and your family from getting infected from the seasonal and H1N1 flu virus. While you cannot completely control your family's external environment of everyday life, you can take measures within your own home to drastically reduce the chance of illness for you and your family. Here are tips for preventative measures that will ensure you and your family's well-being.

1. Keep Hands Sanitized and Away from Face

The flu can spread very quickly through contact. Someone who has the flu in your house sneezes on their hands and then touches the phone, refrigerator door, door handles, remote control, and computer keyboard. Germs will live for hours - even weeks - waiting to be picked up by the next person to touch the object. Wash your hands well and often. Use an alcohol-based ...
... hand sanitizer as well.

Flu viruses enter your body through your eyes, nose, or mouth. Touching the face is the main route to illness, and a key antagonist to spreading germs to loved ones.

2. Drink Plenty of Healthy Fluids

Water is known to flush your system, washing away any poisons while it re-hydrates you. A healthy adult needs eight 8-fluid ounce glasses of fluids a day. This means water, vitamin-rich juices, and sports drinks with electrolytes. You know you are getting enough fluids when your urine is close to clear. If it's a deep yellow, you need more fluids.

Social mythology leads many to believe that alcohol consumption will help kill germs. Heavy alcohol use suppresses the immune system in various ways. Alcohol also dehydrates your body, so cut out alcohol beverages if you begin to feel sick.

3. Eat Yogurt and Phytonutrients

Many researchers believe that the beneficial bacteria in yogurt may stimulate the immune system to help fight disease. A daily cup of low-fat yogurt has been proven to reduce the risk of colds and flu by 25 percent. Combine yogurt in your diet with phytonutrients, aka plants, and give your immune system a supercharged boost. The natural chemicals in dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruit enhance the effects of vitamins in food. Eat healthy and you can naturally fight off germs.

4. Saunatize

Recent studies have found that people who take a steam bath twice a week got half as many colds as those who didn't. This has led to a theory that if you inhale air hotter than 80 degrees, you will stay healthy. This is a temperature too hot for flu viruses to survive.

Take one or two hot showers a day. Place a small towel over your head and sit under the shower head. This will allow steam to build up under the towel while you take deep breaths, inhaling hot steaming air that will help fight off germs.

5. Clean Air

A regular dose of fresh air is important, especially during cold weather when central heating makes you more vulnerable to the flu virus. Taking preventive measures to maintain and circulate clean air throughout your home is recommended.
