In modern society, it seems sometimes as though we have gone out of our way to purposely forget our past. This is reflected in some of the laws we have made, and in how Western medicine has treated traditional cures used by cultures that have (in some cases) long since disappeared. In the case of medicine, this is slowly being reversed, but decades of tradition in Western medicine that says that all 'traditional' and 'natural' forms of medicine must be ineffective still linger. The psilocybin or magic mushroom has suffered under this reputation as well as many other valuable herbs and supplements. This does not mean that all traditional forms of medicine are good, or are called for on a regular basis, but there is growing evidence that many traditional forms of healing, and traditional nature based drugs can be effective. A number of mushroom varieties have been studied, and have been shown to be effective in treating a variety of disorders. These studies have taken place at major medical schools and research facilities, such as Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where it has been shown in studies by Roland Griffiths, a ...
... lead author of the study and a professor of behavioral biology at John Hopkins. This study focused on psychological health, but many other studies have also been completed which show the compounds in 'magic mushrooms' can aid in a number of problems faced by people in the modern world, from helping to reduce smoking (also studied at John Hopkins medical school) to combatting cluster headaches ( a type of migraine headache) and other ailments, and mushroom spores are fairly easy to propagate. Of course, most ancient societies (and a number of current societies) ingest psilocybin, most often from the cubensis strain of mushrooms for non-medicinal reasons. These reasons are most often related to spirituality and religious reasons, and have a long history in cultures that are spread across the world, from the Mixtec cultures of Mexico to the ancient cultures of the Tassili Plateau in what is now northern Algeria. Paintings depicting mushroom themes have been dated as old as 5000 years, and this type of evidence has been found in many different cultures in Central and South America. After Cortez's victory over the Aztecs in 1521, the European powers soon outlawed all non-alcoholic forms of intoxication. Of course, mushrooms were not the only substances these and other cultures used - psychedelic substances can be found in a number of plants, and these substances were widely used by a number of cultures for spiritual, religious and ceremonial traditions. Some other substances include Peyote, Xochipilli and other substances. Like all 'natural' substances, natural does not necessarily mean safe - this is especially true when combining any natural substance with modern medicines. And there can be bad side effects of eating P. Cubensis or other types of psychedelic mushrooms. But more and more people are realizing that the magic mushroom can be beneficial, both in medical uses and in exploring the spiritual aspects of the human mind. More countries are beginning to re-examine the laws which make mushrooms and other natural psychedelics and intoxicants illegal, and a number of countries have already reversed these laws. This does not mean a person should approach these potent plants with a lax attitude - they can alter consciousness in potentially beneficial ways, but any drug should always be taken with great care, and in the right circumstances. Modern science, however, is proving that psilocybe mushrooms can be both medically and spiritually beneficial - mushrooms and magic mushroom spores are once again finding acceptance in society and modern medicinal techniques.
