Facts About Mental Health And Violence
It is a misconception that mentally ill people are violent, hence vast majority of crowd assumes that, people who suffers from mental sickness is a threat to the society. But according to the survey, it is found in a survey that people with normal brain activities are more dangerous than people, who suffer from the mental problems. According to the surveys and theories it is concluded, that people with mental sickness are biggest threat to themselves or they are victims of violence.
The society is always misinformed about the connection between the mental disorder and violence, which puts the stigma on these mentally ill people and they are discriminated from the society. At the most crucial period of time, when they need love and proper care, they are forced to stay alone without any help. Because of the lack of information on this topic, people discriminate mentally sick people, which put a very bad effect on their health and situation. They stop socializing, start to avoid people around them and start to live in their own loop or world, which triggers the problems like low self-esteem, hopelessness, sadness ...
... and isolation.
Because of the ignorant attitude of the society towards these mentally ill people, they don’t come out in public and discuss their problem with others and they refuse to take any treatment, which makes their problem more dangerous.
Following are the fact, which helps in determining the link between the mental health and violence:
Every year in Britain, around 95% of crimes are committed by the people with healthy mental state.
In the year 1974 and 1994, the rate of crime was increasing very fast, but these crimes were not committed by the people who are facing mental sickness.
A man under the influence of alcohol or drug is more dangerous to the society as compared with the man who is facing mental health problem.
15% of mentally ill people who are suffering from depression commit suicide.
10% of people suffering from schizophrenia commit suicide.
It is important to understand that, people with mental sickness are very disturbed, lonely and frightened; they need acceptance from the society, so that they can come out in the public without the hesitation and fear of rejection. With the acceptance from the society, they will feel more confident and secure to share their problems and feelings with others, which will help them to cope up with the mental disorder.
People suffering from mental disorder, who have support from family and friends tends to seek medical treatment and medications at early stage of their sickness, which helps them in their fast recovery. It is crucial, that society accepts the people with mental condition because it will reduce the chances of self-pity, Suicide and other types of personal risks. It is found that, the major cause of violence is not the mental sickness of the patient, but it is the socio-economic and demographic factors like being young, aggressive, bad economic condition, under the influence of drug or alcohol and personal grudge.
