Sardinia - Berchidda And The Jazz Festival
Berchidda, in the historical region of Logudoro, fertile territory of North Sardinia, rises to the bases of Mount Limbara's about 30 km south west of Olbia and the beaches.
Berchidda is a small village of 3,300 inhabitants in the center of an area where people and events have left deep scars from the very earliest times, even today can be observed numerous archaeological remains of prehistoric times: domus de Janas, defensive structures megalithic, dolmens and nuraghi.
In the Middle Ages Berchidda was an important center of grain production and strategic border between Giudicati di Torres and Gallura.
Berchidda holds a territory rich in terms of natural beauty. The woods that fringe Seleme river up to the slopes of Mount Limbara are characterized by Mediterranean flora and fauna. The valley is home meandering rivers that flow into the lake Coghinas and of valuable vineyards.
Berchidda today, through the cooperative system, has developed important activities in the agro- livestock, in the production of wine, cheese and traditional patisserie.
The perfect organic balance, the mild climate, ...
... the fertile land and the absence of pollution in Sardinia encourage the cultivation of several kinds of Mediterranean plants such as blueberry, prickly pears, almonds, hazel nuts, chestnuts, citrus fruits, grapes, olive and strawberry tree, from which the bees derive the nectar that gives a slightly bitter taste to honey.
Berchidda is one of the many rural villages of Gallura, renowned for its traditional natural products, food and wine. The land of the precious "Vermentino di Gallura" wine, is the home of the Wine Museum, which is located in the upper part of the village. The Wine Museum, the first Italian multimedia Museum of wine is a modern building with a rooftop terrace from which you can admire the vineyards of the area. Visiting the wine Museum is a must to explore the interesting information about the viticulture's history of the island. The museum of Berchidda is divided into several rooms, where are exposed the utensils used in Sardinia in ancient times, in different eras and regions, for working the vineyards and the grapes: vats, tanks for the pressing, presses with granite base.
Tours can be arranged, including guided wine tasting of a range of wines, myrto liquor and soft local grappa mono-vitigno.
A jazz festival called Time in Jazz takes place every year in Berchidda since 1988. Paolo Fresu, the famous Sardinian trumpet player, born in Berchidda in 1961, is the founder and the organizer of this festival.
The jazz event is one of the most prestigious international events in Sardinia and its program includes numerous concerts, exhibitions, shows and performances.
