Today, I returned to the ensemble singing workshops I give to musical theatre students at Greenwich College, London. This term has seen the enrolment of a further 15 students to make the total ensemble around 35. I soon got them singing and after 30 minutes work, we had learnt a new song in four parts. The sound was in tune, stable and well-supported. But it still didn't sound particularly professional.

Whatever you're singing, it is important to find an emotional context to the song you are performing and communicate this to your audience through the song. You can do this with the use of facial expression and by 'singing with the eyes'. As soon as singer at any level begins to use their eyes when singing, the sound is transformed.

So, having laid the foundation of a good performance with my students today, I spent time exploring the emotional context of the piece and developed techniques for each performer to tell a story through the song. As soon as this became part of the rehearsal process, the sound began to have more definition, dynamism and energy.

This simply proved the power of singing with your ...
... eyes. I highly recommend you think about this the next time you sing.
