We have all had that sinking feeling as we turn the key ready for the journey to work and the engine just groans and fails to turn over. However there are a number of simple checks that will minimise breakdowns and keep you safer once you are moving.

1. Battery. As soon as you sense that your battery is nearing the end of its life, replace it. It is simply false economy to keep on charging it up. Modern batteries are designed for maintenance free use and will give you years of service, but once they are worn out just go to your preferred parts department and they will be able to supply the correct unit.

2. Screen Wash. This item is so often overlooked and could result in an accident. Some modern compound resist freezing and will not damage your paintwork. Always check that your water bottle is topped up before a journey and that the jets are functioning correctly.

3. Anti freeze. The concentration of this product is crucial to the correct functioning of the cooling system of your engine. It is highly recommended that you get this checked by a professional, as the consequences of a frozen engine can ...
... be both dangerous and very expensive.

4. Lights. Ask a friend or a family member to look at your lights as you operate the main beam, brakes, indicators and hazard warning lights. Apart from being good practice, it's also a legal requirement that all external lights operate correctly.

5. Tyres. Often in snow and ice it is difficult to see the amount of tread you have left on your tires. When cleaning your car give the wheels a good check all the way across the entire width of the tyre. If you are unsure of the legal limit, take the vehicle to your main dealer and ask them to inspect them for you. Some reputable service centres will carry out this service free of charge and will also be able to supply new units if required.

6. Visibility. Frequent washing of your car will increase your visibility in adverse weather conditions and also keep your bodywork free of road salt which actually attacks your paintwork.

7. Brakes. These are often overlooked but are one of the most vital parts of any motor car. The temperature changes which occur in winter can make the braking material expand and contract, which coupled with the constant bombardment from salt and water, can cause a loss in braking efficiency. If you are in any doubt whatsoever, get the system checked by a trained technician.

8. Planning your journey. Remember, when setting out on a journey, plan ahead. Make sure you are wearing suitable clothing and have extra items such as blankets. The interior of your car may seem nice and snug whilst the engine is running, but the temperature will soon drop if you have a problem. Always keep your car topped up with fuel, carry a torch, a shovel and most importantly a fully charged mobile phone. Even if the journey seems relatively short it may be worth considering taking food and hot drinks. Another item which is proving very useful these days is satellite navigation. These units could give you alternative routes if the road ahead is blocked by snow or an accident, and can also be an easy method of determining were you are if you have to contact the emergency services.
