From the invention of the printing press to the telephone, the radio, and internet, the ways(through networks like 2G, 3G, 4G, etc) people communicate is changing dynamically. The effects of these changes often resound through generations. Telecom technology is the very essence of today’s telecommunications industry. To par with the ever-growing need for sophisticated IT industry and people’s needs with the aim to keep the cost levelheaded is the challenge for telecom industry.
Today this industry has affected every phase of life – not just the corporate sector, but lives of common people too, in ways they have never envisioned. Here is an insight on development in telecom industry and, the anticipation how it is going to feed the needs of present and upcoming generation.
IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)
IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a generic architecture. It includes multimedia and voice over IP services, defined by 3GPP -3rd Generation Partnership Project . It supports multiple access types such as WCDMA, GSM, CDMA2000, WLAN, Wireline broadband and other packet data applications. Due to its invention, ...
... the internet technologies – be it e-mail, web browsing, instant messaging and video conferencing, etc – are accessible to everyone from any location. IMS is also meant to enable operators to introduce new services, such as MMS, WAP & web browsing at top level of packet-switched networks.
IMS is designed to provide a unified architecture that supports an array of IP-based services over both circuit and packet-switched networks, employing a range of different wireless and fixed access technologies. One can use IMS in various applications such as Full Duplex VideoTelephony, Unified messaging, Instant messaging, Multiparty gaming, Multimedia advertising, Video streaming and Web/Audio/Video Conferencing etc.
High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA)
HSDPA is a packet based technology for W-CDMA downlink. Its data transmission rates are 4 to 5 times more than that of current generation 3G networks (UMTS). And, 15 times faster than GPRS. The latest release of HSDPA is equipped with advanced technology that boosts downlink speeds. One can experience increased speed from the current rate of 384 kbps (up to 2 Mbps according to standards) to a maximum value according to standards of 14.4 Mbps. With the higher data rates and higher capacities, HSDPA creates a smooth path for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). It also provides enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) does in the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) world.
A New Era of Mobile TV
These days mobile TV has become one of the most effective media to stream TV series onto the mobile or on the hand-held device. Over the next couple of years, Mobile TV will getmore and more popularity. These days, this technology is typically streamed over 3G networks. Though sending an individual data stream to each viewer is inefficient, it will unsustainable in the long run if mobile TV takes off.
It is usually believed that 3G streaming is a prelude to construct a mobile – TV broadcast networks – which transmits digital TV signals on different frequencies to those used for voice and data.
Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO)
MVNO is a GSM phenomenon. It is a ground-breaking solution to maintain network for those operators or companies that don’t have a licenced spectrum and any networkinginfrastructure. MVNO resell wireless services using regular telecom operator’s network with which they have a business arrangements. Generally, they purchase minutes of use from a licenced telecom operator and then resell minutes of usage to their MVNO customers.
Virgin Mobile is one of the burning examples of it. Virgin does not maintain its own network. Instead, it signs a contract with other providers to use their existing networks. For example, it uses T-mobile network in the UK whereas the Sprint network in the US. Optus and Bell Mobility are other networks used by Virgin Mobile in Australia and Canada.
Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)
Defined by IETF to replace the current version of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4), Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is an innovative suite kept under the standard protocols for the network layer of the internet. Being interoperable with the current IPv4, it is also known as Next Generation Internet Protocol, which can easily be installed as a normal softwareupgrade in internet devices.
4G or Fourth Generation
Fourth Generation (4G in short), the upcoming technology in the field of mobile and wireless communications, will be the successor of the 3Rd Generation (3G) network technology. It expected to be technologically developed as long as by the end of 2015. Currently, 3G networks are on rise. There is huge demand of this third generation network. Mainly, TV series and video are driving forward third generation (3G) deployment. And, within two years, higher speeds data at lower cost will drive forward the fourth generation (4G) as short-range communication emerges. With the high degree of synchronization and personalization between various user appliances, service and application ubiquity will be another driver. At the same time, it is possible that the radio access network will evolve from a centralized architecture to a distributed one.
