What a fascinating topic. It appears we're just starting to realise the power of hypnosis, yet it's been used for hundreds of years. In this over view of hypnosis down the years, you may be surprised by a few of the conditions it has been helpful with.
In 1841 James Braid created the name Hypnosis, before that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid had decided to change the name because there was now a more complete understanding of how hypnosis actually worked. In Mesmerism, practitioners believed they had some special knowledge or unique power, and that for this reason, people became entranced. Braid uncovered that the operator did not have any magical ability, but instead the hypnotic trance happened by what was going on in the subject's thoughts.
In the 1900's professor Emile Coue became one of the earliest people around the subject of hypnosis through auto-suggestion. This was the power to give hypnotic commands to one's self, which reinforced the developments Dr Braid had made earlier, hypnosis was a self induced state of mind. The work he did compounded the works of Dr Braid in previous years. The model of hypnosis ...
... being more of a self controlled frame of mind, in place of one reliant on the hypnotist was now starting to become popular. What this meant was that more people could now benefit from this method to enhance their lives.
Professor Sigmond Freud who was well known for his work in psychoanalysis, at first disregarded the plausibility of hypnosis at the start of his career. Influenced by his rejection of hypnosis, lots of people never considered using it. His thoughts on hypnosis as an aid to therapy did change as he was exposed to applications of it, however this came when he was older, too late for him to publish on it. For some time following this, the practise of hypnosis was continued by stage operators.
Around the 50's Doctor Milton Erickson pioneered a much different style of hypnotherapy. This became known as indirect hypnosis, it distanced itself from the methods used previously. Being successful with people who found hypnosis difficult became a hallmark of Psychologist Milton Ericksons.
Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, who became a big contributor to hypnosis in that period, had a very different approach compared to Doctor Milton Erickson. Dave Elman pioneered the use of fast and powerful approaches, and today these are still being used. He excelled in educating dentists and doctors in the use of hypnotic anaesthesia, many of his teachings are currently taught to this day to help with painless childbirth and in the field of hypnotherapy.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. Many great hypnotists of today have been influenced by his hypnotic and therapeutic methods. McGill died in 2005.
To the regret of the hypnosis world, in 2010 by far the most respected hypnotists of our time died, Gil Boyne. A direct student of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill incorporated Stage hypnotist Dave Elmans insights and worked them towards a unique hypno-analysis method. Author of the well heeled 'Transforming Therapies' known as 'The Bible' in the area of theraputic analysis.
Thanks to advances in I.T., today's therapists have much more access to resources than the hypnotherapists of old had. As research progresses more and more physical problems are now being helped using hypnosis, incorporating the discoveries made through modern technology.
