Mobile Apps Account To A Considerable ‘digital Time’

How long is your digital time? How long do you spend browsing, using, and enjoying digital content? And which digital technology are you inclined most to? Of course it is your mobile phone. Most people today spend fewer hours with their desktops and more on their mobile phones. The main reason behind mobile becoming a popular technology for Internet browsing and digital activities is mobile applications. Today, there are many things that can be done using mobile apps. The popularity of mobile devices has become popular so much so that in a survey it has been found that around 52% of digital time of the US people is spent using mobile apps. This finding has been reported by the popular Internet analytics company Comscore. The study has also confirmed that people use social media, Internet radio, and browse photos more using the mobile phones than their PCs. This is the 1st time ever that the popularity of mobile apps has found to have reached such heights.

... Quite interestingly, user engagement with mobile apps was around 50% last year, which has increased to an impressive 60% now. A majority of the digital time being found to spent on mobile applications.
Which mobile apps are engaging more?
According to the report by ComScore, it is the digital radio that engages users for a long time. Users tend to spend more time with radio than with other applications in their mobile phones. Pandora is leading the category. Around 96% of radio engagement of the users comes through mobile devices i.e. the users are using their mobile phones to listen to Internet radio. The second category of apps that attract more of user engagement is photo editing and sharing apps. Applications like Instagram and Flickr are used by a lot of people. These are the apps that are increasing the digital time of the users on mobile devices. Furthermore, the app report found that applications like instant messaging and maps are accessed more using tablets and smartphones.
The report by ComScore also signals that there is growth in the social networking category. Flagship apps by social networking sites like Facebook are also engaging users increasingly. Total mobile engagement in social media apps has grown 55 percent and there is around 70 percent of digital time being engaged with these apps. Interestingly, social media applications has accounted for around 31 percent of all Internet growth. This growth has been noted since 2013.
According to the report by comScore, “While the mobile platform shift continues unabated, not every content category has experienced the shift at the same speed… Amazingly, but perhaps not altogether unexpectedly, a couple of important categories have shifted almost exclusively to mobile."
In a comment on its report, ComScore further mentioned - While social networking does not rank at the very top of this list among the most mobile-skewing content categories, it is arguably the most important.”
