Facebook App Loads Images 15% Faster On Ios, And Cut Errors On Android By 8%

iOS app
For the Facebook app on iOS platform, development engineers have adopted an image format namely Progressive JPEG or PJPEG format. This format would be helpful in creating better versions of the images that are being uploaded to the social media network. Moreover, users will be able to download good quality pictures from Facebook. According to the Facebook developers users can download and render a low quality version of a photo from Facebook and then update the image with recent and better version later. This method of downloading and updating images on the social media site is actually a replacement for an old rendering model that needed downloading URLs. The URLs were used for standard JPEGs and then the images in the JPEG format themselves.
According to a blogpost by Tomer Bar, Facebook engineering manager, “Using PJPEG, we can show a good image 15 percent faster than before. This image is barely discernible from the full-quality version.” According to Bar, implementing PJPEG images means using at least 10% of less data with standard JPEG than FB app for iOS.
Facebook app for Android
While ...
... modifications and improvements were done to the Facebook app for iOS, there were certain modifications on the Android too. Errors on the Facebook’s flagship app were cut down by about 8% by the developers at Facebook.
For the Android version of the application there was a lot of rethinking done to improve user experience. Modifications and rethinking has been done on the way content is rendered in News Feeds. Developers have spent a lot of time to cut down a lot of out-of-memory errors. The reduction of such errors has been done up to 17%. Thus, there was a total reduction in error and it is down by around 8%.
Recent hacks and improvisations on the part of the Facebook team implies that Facebook is keen on improving and enhancing user experience and continues to improve upon that till date. A smooth user experience is what Facebook aims with its flagship application. By doing this, the Facebook team is also hoping that it would also improve the performance of advertisements on the social media portal. It will in turn help Facebook to generate revenues. It also seems that Facebook is up to impressing the mobile application developers a bit by participating in varied engineering feats.
Facebook is world’s presumably, the largest social network site with more than 1.39 billion active users monthly is sure to striving hard to correct errors and faults with its mobile application. With its recent efforts the company has succeeded in providing top class user experience to its users.
