What an interesting topic. It appears we're just beginning to realise the power of hypnosis, although it's been used for hundreds of years. The following is a brief snapshot of hypnosis down the years, and you may be a little intrigued by a few of its applications.
It was in the year 1841 that James Braid invented the name Hypnosis, prior to that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid decided to change the name as he now had a more complete understanding of what was happening when someone used hypnosis. The old practitioners of Mesmerism believed that it was because of some unique power or knowledge they held and practised, which caused people to enter the trance like state. But, Dr Braid discovered that it was not down to any magical power the Mesmerist had developed, but instead what the subject did inside their own mind that developed the hypnotic trance.
Emile Coue became one of the first people to publish a book on self-hypnosis. This work reinforced and complimented the findings of Dr Braid in previous years. The concept of hypnosis as a state that was self induced, instead of one dependent on power of the hypnotist ...
... was now becoming more plausible. What this did was it began to open the ability for people to use self-hypnosis to enrich their minds with for change.
Professor Sigmond Freud started working with hypnosis with the intention of proving his model of psychoanalysis coming to the latter part of the 19th century, unfortunately he disregarded it as having little value. He has been reported saying towards the end of his career, had he learned the value of hypnosis at the start of his career, as he did toward the end of his career, he would never have stopped using it.
Doctor Milton Erickson in the mid 1900's created a style of hypnotherapy called indirect hypnosis, which is still referenced by many hypnotherapists today. is often used to help subjects who found it hard to undergo hypnosis.
Also around the same time as Psychologist Milton Erickson, Dave Elman was showing medical and dental professionals a very different approach to hypnosis. This type of therapy was cutting edge, and often used anaesthesia and hypno-analysis. His rapid hypnotic methods are still used by practitioners today.
Ormond McGill died in 2005, a hypnotist who enriched the lives of many people. Writer of the 'Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' and he was called 'The Dean of American Hypnosis'. He wrote many books on stage hypnosis work, however it must be said he was also brilliant as a therapist as well.
Considered by many to be the most respected hypnotist of this generation, Gil Boyne died in 2010. A known advocate of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill incorporated Dave Elmans innovations and created a more complete hypno-analysis method. The book 'Transforming Therapies' was the synthesis of his learnings in hypnosis.
Currently there are too many outstanding contributors in the field of hypnosis to mention. As a result of the internet, we now have an ever increasing sharing of discoveries among practitioners, and this has been used in helping physical pain, like cancer and multiple sclerosis, as well as the traditional applications of weight control and giving up smoking.
