What an interesting subject. Hypnosis has been used for a very long time, yet it appears that we are only just beginning to comprehend it's power. The following is a brief snapshot of hypnosis through the years, and you may find yourself quite surprised by some of its applications.
It was in the year 1841 that James Braid created the name Hypnosis, prior to that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid had decided to change the name because there was now a more complete understanding of hypnosis. Practitioners of Mesmerism believed that it was because of some unique knowledge or power they practised, which induced the state of mesmerism. James Braid realised that the operator did not hold any power, but instead the mesmerism happened by what was going on inside the subject's mind.
One of the first people to publish on self-hypnosis was Mr Emile Coue. The approach he took was based on Braids work before him. The model of hypnosis being a self-induced frame of mind, in place of one dependent on the hypnotist alone was now starting to become more popular. The result was people could now start to use this learning to improve ...
... themselves.
The renowned Doctor of psychology Dr Sigmond Freud strangely disregarded hypnotherapy as useless for analysis. Because of his slandering of hypnosis, many academics shied away from it's use at the time. He massively changed his views about hypnosis later in life, unfortunately the views that were printed in his books remained in the teachings of psychologists during that time. Thankfully it's because of the stage performers carrying on the use of hypnosis, that the art didn't die out during that time.
A well known approach of hypnosis Psychologist Milton Erickson in the 50's. It began to move away from older traditional approaches, and was called indirect hypnosis. Helping subjects who had been unsuccessful became a speciality of Psychologist Milton Ericksons.
A massive influence on hypnosis in that period was Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, whose method was much more authoritative compared to Doctor Milton Erickson. Dave Elman was famous for the kind of rapid and powerful solutions, often employed by many hypnotherapists today. Elman specialised in educating medical and dental professionals in the use of hypnotic anaesthesia, many of his methods are often used to this day pain-free childbirth and traditional analysis.
Ormond McGill was buried in 2005, a hypnotherapist who enriched the lives of many people. One of his many book was the 'Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' and he was titled 'The Dean of American Hypnosis'. He was best known for his stage hypnosis work, but he was also innovative as a therapist as well.
Gil Boyne died in 2010, author of Transforming Therapy, which builds on previous findings made by Dr Erickson and Elman, and has greatly influenced regression therapy for both direct and indirect hypnosis. Gil Boyne expanded on Elman and Erickson's styles, and used these to fashion a therapy system used in many schools today. Many have said that Boyne was a great leader in the field of reliable therapy techniques.
