A joiner is a person who does work on wood; they usually join the wood pieces to produce a piece of furniture. They can do much more than constructing a cabinet. They are specialised in a wide variety of works such as architectural wood work, cabinet making, boat interiors, furniture making and manufacturing the fixtures of the stores.

Nature of joiners work:

The nature of work varies according to the areas. If a joiner undertakes all the interior work of a shop he will be going through the blueprints and imagine the item to be constructed, draw the items in a detailed manner. Make the list of cutting for various items, bring all the components, assemble them and then finish the work. Otherwise when the individual is specialized in one or more activities then the joiner will do the work what he is been asked to take care of. A person who works on the architectural wood work is known as joinery millwork.

Millwork:

When a client enters a space the first thing they often see is the interiors of the store. This work should be done carefully and the basic tool is to communicate the needed design and the ...
... work of a joiner is to produce an atmosphere that is needed by the storekeeper. On the other hand if the millwork is not properly designed and done it may lead to errors that are very expensive. Which in turn can damage millwork, diminish function or other surfaces. If it’s not done according to the wish of the owner then it becomes expensive disappointment. Fortunately, there are a few approaches and tools which are simple to design millwork and the specifications help designers to eliminate the problems which are most common and disappointment.

Quality Standards:

The quality standards which are established by architectural woodwork institute for architectural millwork should be familiar to any individual who undertake specifying and designing millwork. AWI is an association for trade and it is a non-profit organisation, there are around 4000 members from supply, manufacturing and design firms. The AWI has defined the industry standard and the quality standard for the construction, design and installation of millwork which has a quality to its highest. These standards give information about all the aspects of millwork which includes specifications technically for materials, finishing, joinery, and installation for various products which range from doors, cabinets, windows, trim etc.

AWI standards

These standards are established by AWI because the architectural millwork production is highly complicated which uses various techniques. These standards help the millwork manufacturers to be reliable and clear about the work in which they are in charge in the part of the project. There are three grades which depend on the quality. Such as

• Economy
• Custom
• Premium

The AWI concentrates mainly on the custom and premium grades. In the economy grade the commercial millwork is rarely specified. For the applications commercially the premium grade is the best in which the work has more wear and tear. If the millwork is done according to the standard then the joiner can save time.
