Such an interesting topic. It seems as though we're just starting to understand the power of hypnosis, although it's been around for hundreds of years. What follows is a brief overview of hypnosis down the years, and you may find yourself quite surprised by some of its uses.
In the year 1841 James Braid created the name Hypnosis, before that it was known as Mesmerism. The main reason Braid wanted to change the name was due to a new understanding of the way hypnosis really works. Practitioners of Mesmerism believed in some unique power, and that for this reason, people became mesmerised. It was Braid who uncovered that the operator did not have any power, but instead the hypnotic trance happened by what was going on within the subject's mind.
It was in the 1900's when a man named Emile Coue started exploring the usefulness of hypnosis in the form of auto-suggestion. James Braid had uncovered at an earlier time that hypnosis or 'trance' was a self-induced state, and this ability for a person to give themselves positive suggestions really proved his methodology. His system was very much built on Braids work before him. ...
... People now started to explore hypnosis through the eyes of a participant, rather than one under the power of the hypnotist.
Towards the end of the 19th century, Professor Sigmond Freud started experimenting with hypnosis to support his psychoanalysis work, however disregarded it and felt it had little value. He is reported saying at a later stage in his career, if only he understood as much about hypnosis in his earlier career, as he did in the latter part of his career, he would have never stopped using it.
Doctor Milton Erickson in the 60's and 70's created a style of hypnosis known as indirect hypnosis, which has influenced many therapists today. is used for hypnotising clients that had difficulty when attempting to achieve hypnosis.
Dave Elman, also a massive figure in hypnosis in that period, promoted a completely different approach than Milton Erickson. Elman was known for his success with fast and powerful methods, which are still used today. Elman was perhaps best known for teaching medical and dental professionals in the use of hypnotic anaesthesia, many of his approaches are still cutting edge even to this day by many in the field of painless childbirth and hypno-analysis.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. McGill died in 2005.
Considered by many to be the most respected hypnotist of our time, Gil Boyne passed away in 2010. A student of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill took Dave Elmans innovations and developed a more in-depth hypno-theraputic system. The classic work 'Transforming Therapies' were his contribution to hypnosis today.
Today the hypnotist has a bigger wealth of information readily available than the hypnotists of old could even imagine. Information collaboration across the web has yielded amazing breakthroughs around areas including M.S. and cancer as well as many other problems people face.
