One of the main reasons we all use our smart phones today is to communicate. And not just communicate but get involved within our text applications. There are so many chat applications that it would be hard to list them all but it is not that overwhelming to understand the basics of how they work. There are certain key elements of a chat app and those include the chat server, the IOS SDK or Android APK (depending on which smartphone you have), the internet, and then the user interface.

The chat server is based on XMPP and you can think of this as to what connects your phones together in order to communicate. You are able to use this server in order to view messages offline, keep a certain connection established, and even talk to multiple people at one time. Without the chat server, you would have no foundation to chat on to begin with. It is important to have a stable chat server so that people are able to get their messages across in the first place.

The IOS SDK and Android APK are the programming languages behind the applications. This involves everything from local database storage and push notifications, to ...
... extracting data and relaying messages to you. Applications are made using these languages and they make up everything your favorite applications have to offer.

The internet, which should be self-explanatory, also plays a hand in your chat apps. Without your phone having a clear connection to the internet, you would not be able to use these chat applications. There would be no sending pictures, videos, or links as this all relies on having a clear and consistent internet connection. This is also what allows the chat server to carry your messages from phone to phone.

Lastly, the user interface is a very important aspect of your chat application as well. This is what your eyes see and what your fingers touch. The challenge is knowing where to place what buttons on a small, smartphone screen and what your eyes should be looking at. Some programs may be brilliant but if it has an unresponsive, or even just ugly, user interface than no one will want to use it. All of these elements come together to make the key ingredients to what a chat application is. There is of course more to it but the understanding of these components will certainly make your life easier.
