The Hidden Truth About How Hypnosis Evolved!
What a fascinating subject. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time, but it appears that we are just starting to comprehend it's potential. The following is a brief snapshot of hypnosis through the years, and you might be a little intrigued with some of its uses.
Hypnosis as a term was introduced by a man called James Braid in 1841, before that had been called Mesmerism. Braid opted to change the name as there was now a new understanding of hypnosis. The old practitioners of Mesmerism had believed that it was because of some magical power or knowledge they held, which induced the trance like state. Braid made the discovery that the Hypnotist didn't hold any special power, but instead the state happened through what was going on in the subject's thoughts.
Emile Coue became one of the first people to write a book on auto-suggestion. His system was very much built on Braids work before him. The face of hypnosis was changing as people now began to regard hypnosis as a type of focus they could attain themselves, rather than one dependent on the hypnotist.
Professor Sigmond Freud started using hypnosis with ...
... the intention of proving his model of psychoanalysis coming to the latter part of the 19th century, but didn't see the benefits of it. Many people have said that, much later in life stated that he definitely wouldn't have stopped using hypnotherapy, had he known the potential of it earlier in his career.
Around the 1950's Psychologist Milton Erickson developed a much different style of therapy. This was known as indirect hypnosis, it was very different from the more direct methods used by previous hypnotists. Working with people who rejected hypnosis started to become a hallmark of Psychologist Milton Ericksons.
Dave Elman, who became a big figure in hypnosis around the same time, had a much more authoritative style compared to Psychologist Milton Erickson. Dave Elman was well known for his rapid and powerful approaches, and today these are still being used. He excelled when teaching medical and dental professionals about the value of hypnosis for pain control, many of his methods are being taught to this day by many in the field of pain-free childbirth and traditional analysis.
A therapist who taught hypnosis to many hypnotists was Ormond McGill, sadly passed in 2005. Known as 'The Dean of American Hypnosis', he wrote many classic books on stage hypnosis. As well as being known as a an excellent therapist he had worldwide fame for his stage hypnosis exploits.
A major contributor to hypnosis methods used today, Gil Boyne died in 2010. A student of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill took Dave Elmans teachings and developed a highly advanced method of therapy. He wrote the still referenced 'Transforming Therapies' which is regarded as a classic in the field of theraputic analysis.
Presently there is a massive amount of talented practitioners developing hypnosis. The advent of the internet has given birth to a definite growth in collaboration between hypnotists. With these advancements therapists have made advancements in the application of pain control for serious conditions such as migraines and diabetes in conjunction with the established uses, such as weight control and giving up smoking.
