There is a wide selection of electrician courses from which to choose and a key objective must be to ensure you gain the qualifications necessary to meet the legal requirements of the area of the electrical industry in which you intend to work.

How to Find a Good Training Provider

You should choose a training provider that offers flexibility, particularly if you intend to keep your job while you train. They should also hold industry accreditations and have a track record of success developed over many years. Take care also that they will allow you sufficient time to complete your course as it is common that as little as 12 months can be the maximum.

Some training providers offer courses that omit key qualifications which they say can be done later as ‘an option' whereas in practice you may not be able to operate successfully without them. This is generally a poorly disguised way to keep the headline price as low as possible and this type of marketing relies on the potential student's lack of industry knowledge which often enables the training provider to ‘get away with it'.

Take care ...
... also to check exactly what is included in the fees because another marketing ploy is to quote prices without VAT. After you have enrolled they may also charge extra for examination registration fees, sitting fees, certification fees, consumables, course books or the tools that you need to do your practical work in the training centre!

Training providers may also offer perfectly viable industry qualifications, such as the City & Guilds 2330, but will not point out that as a new industry entrant, even when someone has the 2330 they will need to find a job and have on-site visits from an NVQ assessor before they can get an NVQ Level 3, without which the 2330 is largely irrelevant. The process to get Level 3 can easily take two years or more.

Try to choose a training provider that is open about what they provide. Many training providers will not tell you anything about what they offer unless you agree to one of their representatives visiting your home i.e. the ‘Double Glazing' sales approach.

Finally, do some research on the internet Electrician Forums. Realistically, there will always be some negative feedback about individual providers but you will soon see if there is the kind of overwhelming negativity which signals that you should avoid them

If you follow these few simple guidelines you will certainly avoid many of the usual pitfalls.

Rules and Regulations

The industry is heavily regulated and with good reason. Electricians are often put into potentially dangerous situations and therefore good training coupled with maintaining your qualifications to the latest industry requirements are both essential elements in being able to maintain good industry knowledge and safety standards.

The rules and regulations that govern the electrical industry are constantly evolving; updating your qualifications is a legal requirement that contributes to maintaining safety standards and recognises the impact of new technologies and working practices.

Employers will always actively look for people who hold the ‘right' updated qualifications.

Experience will come over time but the ability to get as qualified and as knowledgeable as possible will stand you in good stead for getting a job at the end of your electrician training or as is significantly more commonplace, starting your own business empire.
