What a fascinating topic. Hypnosis has been used for a very long time, yet it appears that we are only just beginning to understand it's power. The following is a quick snapshot of hypnosis down through the years, and you might be quite surprised by a few of its uses.
Hypnosis as a term was coined by James Braid in 1841, but before that was called Mesmerism. Braid decided to change the name as there was now a fuller understanding of hypnosis. Students of Mesmerism had thought that it was because of some magical knowledge or power they practised, which caused people to enter the state of mesmerism. But, Dr Braid soon realised that it wasn't because of any magical power the Mesmerist held, but instead the reaction of the subject to the suggestions that developed the mesmeric state.
In the early 1900's Emile Coue was one of the first pioneers around the subject of hypnosis through auto-suggestion. This was the ability to give positive suggestions to one's self, thereby reinforcing the discovery James Braid had made earlier, the state of hypnosis was a self induced state. The approach he took was a product of Braids findings ...
... before him. The idea of hypnosis being a self-induced frame of mind, rather than one dependent on the hypnotist was now becoming more popular. The difference this made was anybody could now learn how to harness this ability to enhance their lives.
In the twilight of the 19th century, Sigmond Freud dabbled with hypnosis to see if it could compliment his psychoanalysis work, but he declared that he felt it had little value. He is reported saying at a later stage in his career, if he had learned as much about hypnosis in his earlier career, as he did in the latter part of his life, he would have never stopped using it.
In the middle of the last century Milton Erickson found a different way of doing therapy which gave birth to NLP and influenced many of today's hypnotists - the style of Indirect Hypnosis. can be used for hypnotising patients who struggled to achieve hypnosis.
A revolution in hypnosis was being shown to those in the medical profession during the same time by Dave Elman. Dave Elman taught a very direct style of hypnosis that was useful for anaesthesia and hypno-analysis. To this day some of the approaches he used are still taught for their reliable results.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond McGill died in 2005.
Gil Boyne passed away in 2010, author of Transforming Therapy, which builds on previous findings made by Dr Milton Erickson and Dave Elman, and has greatly influenced hypno-analysis therapy all around the world. Gil Boyne was a student of Elman and Erickson's methods, and used these to create a therapy system used by many practitioners today. A lot of people have said that Boyne was this centuries innovator of analytical hypnotheraputic techniques.
With the touch of a button, today's practitioners have more availability to resources than in years gone by. An ever growing number of life threatening conditions have been helped through analytical therapy, thanks in no small part to the advances made through modern technology. The more well known sessions, like alcohol control, smoking and weight loss have also greatly progressed. Hypnotherapy is producing more reliable results, as the amount of people who use it grows.
