As well as the more obvious contributions from the world of football and rugby, Cambridge also brags connections to more unusual sporting offerings including rowing and some even include punting as a type of sport.
As well as the main city, the outlaying towns and villages are also heavily involved in sports with many local teams competing and playing a variety of sports. The universities in the city have their own teams for sporting activities such as cricket and lacrosse and there are also professional bodies competing in sports in Cambridge like Cambridge United FC and Cambridge RC.
Cambridge United Football Club
The present Cambridge United FC was founded in 1912 with the name Abbey United and after reaching a professional status in 1948, they changed their name to Cambridge United. The club made its first appearance in the Football League in 1970 after periods in the eastern Counties League, the Southern League and the United Counties League.

... this day, no club from the lower divisions of the Football League has ever progressed any further. They currently play at the Trade Recruitment Stadium, after its name change in 2007 from Abbey Road, and previous managers include Ron Atkinson and former player John Taylor.
The man currently at the helm is former Leyton Orient manager Martin Ling and the club play their games in the Blue Square Premier League and are chasing promotion back into the Football League in 2010.
Milton Cricket Club
Cricket is a popular sport in many cities in the UK and Cambridge is no exception. As well as having many university based teams, Milton Cricket Club has an extensive history that dates back many years since its formation in 1911. 2001 welcomed the clubs most successful year and there are both senior and colts teams playing for the Cambridgeshire club. Matches are played at The Sycamores and they enjoy a full season of fixtures that normally begin at 13:30.
Cambridge Rugby United
Cambridge Rugby United Football Club is the most successful club in the Eastern Counties and there are a total of six teams who play at a senior level at social and competitive levels. CRUFC have previously won the Cambridgeshire Cup, Canterbury Shield, Merit League and the eastern Counties Cup among others and the first team are rated in the top 42 clubs in the country.
The rugby club take children in the game seriously and there is a Cambridge Mini Festival held on the Sunday before Easter every year that attracts many clubs from the region to play in a large tournament with around 750 children aged 7-12 competing.
Cambridge '99 Rowing Club
Cambridge is well known for its rowing competition between Oxford and Cambridge universities called the Boat Race and thanks to its numerous canals and rivers; rowing is a popular sport in the city. The Cambridge '99 Rowing Club were founded in 1899 and they take part in various ranks of rowing from beginner's level to those who compete in the Henley Regatta.
Whatever your sport, Cambridge is sure to have something for you to enjoy whether your passion is spectating at the football or competing in the Boat Race.
