When beauty meets quality, there is an explosion. Oak interior doors are the result of one such big bang. Oak, with its fruit the acorn, is an important part of the natural ecosystem. Acorn is the staple diet of many wild and domesticated animals like birds, deer, squirrels, mice, pigs etc. Though acorn is a human edible fruit, it nowadays finds limited use in human cuisine. Instead, man seems to be eternally fascinated by the wood of the oak tree with its beautiful grain markings, and its strength and durability. Among the many items that are produced out of oak wood, the most loved and admired is an oak interior door.

Prior to the 20th century, oak wood was extensively used in timber-framed construction and ship -building. A well-known use of oak wood was in the paneling of one of the larger chambers of the British House of Commons. Later, oak wood started to be used for furniture making, drum making, making of wine barrels and corks, and veneering. It also finds limited use in some medicinal preparations. One of its continuing uses has been in the making of oak interior doors.

The main reason for the continuing ...
... popularity of oak interior doors is the beautiful finish of oak wood. The tree's grain markings are unique especially when it is quarter sawn. Quarter sawing involves sawing of oak at 90-degree angle to the growth rings of a tree. Quarter sawn oak known as wainscot have been in existence from 14th century onwards and it gave an entirely new dimension to the woodcrafts industry from the early parts of the 20th century.

Oak interior doors can be made of plain sawn oak wood or quarter sawn oak wood. Plain sawn wood is easier to produce because the work is faster and there is no waste of timber in it. For quarter sawing, the log is cut into four quarters and then sawn. This types of sawing makes the wood rays in the red and white oaks, known as medullary rays, very conspicuous and gives an exemplary finish and richness to the end product.

Using quarter sawn oak for oak interior doors have additional benefits other than its aesthetic appeal. It reduces the possibility of the door twisting or warping. The type of finish used on the door gives better results when used on a quarter-sawn surface, and liquid percolation is also less when oak is quarter sawn. This type of timber gets better as it ages.

However, quarter sawing is more to enhance the beauty aspect of oak wood, and from the point of view of strength, oak interior doors are a good bet whether it is plain sawn or quarter sawn. Oak wood is hard, its tannin content is high, and it has a high level of resistance to insects and fungi. Oak interior doors, whether they are wood veneer, or solid wood, serve the purpose of inner doors by combining strength and beauty in equal measures.

In panel choice also oak interior doors have a rich fare to offer because there are flat panels, raised panels, arched panels, and eyebrow shaped panels, and each of these could be glazed, and the glass in turn can be stained, frosted, or painted, as the user requires.
