From the day the man opened his eyes, he saw day and night and the need to fight the darkness became paramount for safety from the wild animals. With discovery of fire, burning of wood and oils was the prime source of lighting. Evolution continued and Edison invented the first incandescent lamp which brought in a new revolution to lighting industry.
The lighting techniques have been evolving and technologies have been improving by the day and the industry has seen changes which have given the mankind better lighting at lesser power consumption making the lights more power efficient and pleasing.
Evolution of Lighting
The lights have evolved as under
1. Wood and leaves burning for heating and lighting
2. Burning of Oil and wick
3. Candles using Wax
4. Chemical lighting using incandescence
5. Incandescent bulbs
6. Fluorescent lamps
7. Inert gas filled lamps for specific colour lights
8. Compact Fluorescent Lamps
9. LED lights
Characteristics of LED lamps
LED lamps are the latest in the field of lighting and they are characterized by the following
...
... • Long life: The LED lights have a life span of more than 30,000 hours and it is multiple times as compared to incandescent lamps and the fluorescent tubes. With a normal usage of 8 to 10 hours a day, it is expected to have a life span of nearly 15 years and beyond.
• Solid state devices giving it low voltage operation: LED is a solid state device and all solid state devices work on lower voltages and make them less failure prone. The technology is stable and the products can only evolve towards higher efficiency and longevity.
• Instantaneous ON and OFF capability: Being Solid State device and not using any other principle of eating and discharge, the LED lights have an instantaneous ON and OFF as against the CFL and Fluorescent tubes.
• Capable of Handling wider voltage range: Since all solid state devices wotk at lower voltages and to do that we need to bring the voltage down to a low level and the electronics used there can be so designed so as to render it amenable to higher voltage fluctuations and
• Non Hazardous : The solid state devices and the other electronics used is non hazardous in nature and safe for environments. The failed product can be disposed off and the material recycled as much as possible.
• Low power consumption for same lux level: The LED lights consume much lesser power as compared to the other lighting to produce same Lux level of lighting under the same circumstances. They result is saving in power consumption thereby saving the environments indirectly. Power saved is Power generated.
• Higher efficiency: The per wattage output of light by the LED is significantly higher and is making them preferred over the traditional lights.
• Low heat generation: The traditional lights use heating as the source of light and thereby they produce heat which is wasted and affects the environments. It could result into the following
o Higher power consumption
o Higher environment temperature
o Additional air conditioning load
• Can be in RGB colours and various colour temperatures: The LED due to its technology and by use of doping, it can produce lights of various wavelength and is therefore available in multiple colours without the use of the coloured covers or cases. The colour temperatures make it suitable for us in conditions where Colour Rendering Index may be critical while keeping low power consumption and non heat generating.
• Replacement of the standard Incandescent as well as CFL lamps: The LED lamps being designed are being made to use the standard fitment bases so that they are one to one replacement of the existing lights. It does not need any specific fitment.

With the advantages of longer life and reduced power consumption, LED lights lend themselves to the need of the day where power consumption is the need of the hour as it can control the environmental pollution and help the mankind.
The future of the LED lights is brighter as they become more and more affordable and efficient.
LED lights can be made in various colours depending upon the additive materials which makes them suitable for decorative lighting besides just the functional lighting

Conclusion: It can be concluded that in the foreseeable future LED lights are going to be the basic source of lighting needs of the people. The technological advancements will keep on making them more efficient, power frugal and longer lasting.
