SCART is a French originated standard which is associated with 21 pin connector for connecting the audio and visual equipments together. In France, it is known as Peritel. In Europe, SCART is one of the most common methods of connecting the audio and visual equipments together and has become a standard connector for such devices.

But, SCART is now becoming out of date with the development of new technologies for digital and high definition television such as HDMI. It is not able to transmit HD television signals without significant loss of clarity. There are in-built processors in the modern televisions which converts the lossless digital signals provided by HDMI connections to the television screen. On the other hand, SCART introduces significant losses in the picture quality through earlier conversion to the analog signals. Moreover, it provides lower bandwidth as compare to the newer standards.
