Does Bing Stand A Chance Competing Against Google?

On June 3, Microsoft released its new search tool they've chosen to call Bing. A lot of people considered it the first salvo in a head-to-head challenge to search juggernaut Google. Microsoft has barely mentioned Google in its promotions, choosing to just reiterate Bing's qualities. While there is little argument that Bing is a much more robust tool than Live Search, pundits are less sure about whether Bing will be a threat to Google.

Bing has several features that are of interest to the typical search user. One of the most popular is the "table of contents" that sometimes shows up in the top left-hand column. Another is a search history that is easily accessible. Overall, computer pundits who have test driven Bing have been quite positive, and they haven't found any obvious omissions. They tend to believe that the enormous gap that existed between Google and Microsoft's Live Search can be mostly bridged by Bing.

The user interface that Bing has is described as both cleaner and more complete, with the results pages organized very well. However, most computer pundits say that they can't envision giving up Google ...
... for good. One reason is because Google is the default browser for Firefox. But they also admit that though they didn't utilize Microsoft's Live Search, they do hope to use Bing. Microsoft has heavily pushed Bing, but whether that will be sufficient to lure huge numbers of people away from Google is yet to be seen.

For ordinary searches, Bing shows results that look an awful lot like Google's 10 results per page. However, Bing has a few extras that Google does not. For one, if you try a travel-related search and select "Local" on Bing's results page, you'll be directed to a page that features a map. If you select "Deals," you'll get results from Microsoft's Farecast travel feature. A search on a specific car model will give you an image on Bing and information about gas mileage and price. So it seems that if you mostly do consumer related searches, Bing could be the top rival to Google.

As to whether Bing will de-throne Google from the summit of the search game, most experts believe that whatever measurable inroads Bing makes, they will be to the detriment of other top search engines like Yahoo. The main argument that dedicated Google users present is that Google "isn't broken," so there is no reason to "fix" it, which they see Bing as striving to do.

The ultimate result many search gurus have declared is that Bing will not knock Google off its place at the summit of the search engine popularity contest. It is more apt to tip Yahoo back to a distant third place.
