A popular method of adding elegance and a romantic flair to a room is the use of candles. However, did you know that by using scented candles, the effects multiply? It is no secret that people respond favorably to pleasing aromas.

Making your own scented candles is not that complicated. You can usually procure the fragrance oils needed from a local arts and crafts supply store. One thing you want to be sure of though is that you are buying oil and not a fragrance that is based in alcohol or water since they don't mix.

One of the cool things about properly produced scented candles is that they produce the aroma even when they are not lit. It's not as strong, but it is still there. So, if you are interested in making your own scented candles from home, let's talk about choosing the correct wax for the job first.

All candles are made from paraffin wax, palm oil, beeswax, soy wax or gel. Gel is becoming more prevalent these days. If you decide to go with the gel, one thing you need to keep in mind is that you will need to be aware of the density of the gel. The heavier the density is the heavier the fragrance ...
... is. You will want to experiment with this facet to make sure you don't "over aromatize" your room!

The next step in the process is the wax melting. Never melt the wax over a direct heat source, rather use a double broiler which is essentially a smaller pot placed inside of a larger one. You will want to heat the wax to right around 160-170 degrees F. Once the wax is melted you pour it over your cast inside the mold and put your wick in the center.

The fragrance is not added until you have turned off your heat source. Be careful not to add too much. A good rule of thumb is to use one ounce of your scented oil per one pound of wax. You also want to insure that you don't have too much liquid otherwise your candles will not burn the correct way. You may have to experiment a bit with this part of the process and make sure you keep good notes for future attempts. In time, you will dial it in and get it perfect every time.

Using components like scents and colors gives you much more variety in your candle making. Wouldn't it be great to be able to give a loved one a gift of a candle with the essence of relaxation and a calming sent to go along with it? Now that you understand a little bit more about how to make scented candles, go try it!
