Ellis Bridge is the first bridge built in Ahmedabad. It is the century old heritage bridge. The bridge is across the Sabarmati river, the bridge joins the western and eastern parts of the city. The total length of the bridge is 1,576' (480.365m). The width of the bridge is 6.4 metres. Firstly the Ellis brige was built in 1869 of original wooden by british engineers. The bridge did not last long, and it got destroyed by floods in 1875. Following that they decided to build a new steel bridge.

The bridge was beautifully designed. This was bowstring arch truss bridge. This bridge was reconstructed in 1892. The Ellis bridge built of steel did not suit for heavy motorized traffic and it was narrow too, so they decided to closed down the bridge in 1997. And other reason was that they found the steel piers of the bridge got corroded because of the pollution in Sabarmati river.

The Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation that AMC decided to built RCC that is Reinforced Cement Concrete bridge on the either side of the steel bridge by properly planning the shop drawings of the bridge. The AMC appointed some of the consultants to ...

The Ellis bridge is 120 years old with unique arches. After the construction of RCC on either sides of the steel bridge now it is ready to support heavy motorized traffic. The original steel bridge of bowstring arches is been preserved as a heritage landmark. The bridge was reopened in 1999 and it was renamed as “Swami Vivekananda Bridge” but many of the people still called it as Ellis Bridge.
