The controversy that is Nirvana really emo has remained in the media as it was when it actually began. Of course, Nirvana followers simply disagree that Nirvana is emo and that there are no similarities between the emo music and the rock music that Nirvana played.

To begin with this lets first go through the Nirvana band formation which was in 1987 when singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic joined hands in Aberdeen. Dave Grohl became one of the long lasting drummers in the Nirvana band though there were many others who were a part of Nirvana for some period of time.

Though, Nirvana played a lot of music in their initial years, they got a major breakthrough with their album called Nevermind. And the album's first single Smells Like Teen Spirit gained momentum across the United States of America and United Kingdom making it a stupendous hit taking Nirvana on a international platform along with other rock bands of their times. In a period of just two years, Nirvana became the number one rock band and Nevermind topped the Billboard charts displacing Michael Jackson's Dangerous which had ...
... been there for many weeks. However, in next couple of years to follow, Nirvana went through some bad times when Cobain was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to his head which dissolved Nirvana. It was here when controversies of linking Nirvana with emo music began as more and more people started to talk about the dark side of emo music which romanticizes the death and talks about social alienation and suicide.

During the turn of the century, emo music has largely been in controversy because of many teenage suicides that are being reported. News agencies and media spread out a word that it was because of the emo music that teenagers were being brainwashed to attempt suicide and to prefer to be alone and lonely rather than being exploited by the others. With the trend of suicides increasing in other countries, many countries like Russia, Mexico and the United Kingdom saw mass violence and situations where emos were beaten up on the streets. Many governments announced banning of emo culture and dressing styles in schools and government offices.

Many forums have been developed where stories of Nirvana have been labeled as emo group, but the hard fans of Nirvana simply deny it and the controversy still exist and the argument continues.
