So You Have To Decorate Your Hall And Stairs
This is the job that all home owners dread; these people either have never done any decorating or have some idea of decorating but not a great deal. So this is a huge job for the home owner, and this is a job we get at Salisbury decorators quite often. You may want to get a decorating quote before you start on this job.
When you make a list of the equipment needed to complete this job it’s going to be quite a list. Dust sheets, pair of steps, paint brushes and pots, rollers and paint tray’s, extension pole, filling knives, woodwork paint, ceiling emulsion, wall emulsion.
Clear the area for action
Let’s start, take down the curtains and rails, light fittings, door furniture, and anything that you can move out of the area. If you are buying a new carpet then take the old one up and the underlay and the gripper edging.
Now we have a clear area we need to cover the floor and stairs area with dust sheets so there are no paint drips or roller spray where they shouldn’t be.
Repair all surfaces
Now to make sure you have plenty of light to work with put some stronger light bulbs in ...
... the holders so you can see what you’re doing. Have a good look at all the surfaces, wood and plaster and check if threes any cracks or crumbling areas that need some attention.
Any cracks you find you can rake them out with a screwdriver, and any crumbly areas just chop out with a chisel. Now you need to fill the damaged areas with a quality interior filler and when dry just rub them down with sandpaper, that’s for the wood and plaster. I suppose it’s not too late to look round for some painter and decorator prices if it’s getting you down and it’s taking too long.
O.K. Let’s Paint
Now we need to reach all areas of the ceiling so the right size pair of steps will do the job safely. Now with a pot of brilliant white emulsion and a paint brush we cut into the corners and about 3 inches onto the ceiling area all around the ceiling. Now with a paint roller on an extension pole and a paint tray we give the ceiling one coat of paint. When the paint is dry we repeat the process and give a second coat.
The walls
Now you paint the walls, first with a pot of emulsion and a brush you need to cut into the ceiling, the wall edges and the skirting’s. Now with a paint roller and tray apply the first coat of emulsion, and when dry repeat the process and put the finish coat on.
Woodwork
Using masking tape apply tape on the floor up to the skirting and on the stairs up to the skirting and uprights. Now that the woodwork is repaired and rubbed down properly we can start the painting. Undercoat the woodwork with brilliant white undercoat and when that dries apply a top coat of brilliant white gloss.
Clean up and exit
Now you can pick up all your tools and equipment including the dust sheets and put them all in the van. Put the light fittings back up and the curtains and door furniture, Hoover up the floor and you are finished.
