When it comes to online dating a picture is definitely worth a thousand words, maybe even more. Why you ask? Even though you have the best profile ever written, if your picture doesn't intrigue, nothing else will.

Now I'm not saying you need to be the most attractive person on the planet to draw people in, but your picture should still portray something that people are attracted to. With this in mind, here are some tops to determine what is a photographic hit or miss.

#1. Smile!
You know when someone smiles at you and it makes you feel happy? You feel more comfertable approaching that person, or least smiling back. The same is true for online dating. People would rather see how you look when you're happy. Subconsciously they're looking for someone to make them happy. So smile, at least in your main photo.

#2. Keep Off Accessories
Ditch the baseball cap and sunglasses. Ladies, you might think that wearing sunglasses makes you look like a celebrity, but in reality the eyes are the window to the soul, and most people will be frustrated by the fact that they can't see them. And men, if you're wearing ...

#3. Be Casual
It would be okay to put up one formal photo, just so that daters will know that you clean up well. But for the most part you should keep it casual. This helps potential dates see you as a "real" person, someone they can see themselves hanging out with and getting to know.

#4. Keep Sexiness To A Minimum
If you're looking for a serious, lasting relationship, then posting a super sexy shot can send out the wrong message. A too-hot shot is most likely sending out a "one-night-stand" message instead of "date me". Keep your photos tasteful if you don't want to attract the wrong type of attention.

You post a photo online so that people will know what you look like, but pics can also help describe what your interests are. If for example, you enjoying camping, include a shot of you in the wilderness. This can help encourage someone with the same interests to respond.

#6. Keep Photos Up To Date
Your new date will notice the 10 year age difference as soon as you walk in the door. Be honest about what you look like and who you are. Starting a new relationship with misrepresentations is a waste of time.

If you only put up one picture, people won't believe they're getting a realistic portrayal. You should always post at least two photos. You best bet is to post a close-up and a full-body, so that people can get the whole picture.
