Modern Blood Banks In India Face Serious Shortage Of Donated Blood
n spite of state-of-the-art blood storage facility being introduced in modern blood banks, there is a serious shortage of donated blood in India. This is owing to the fact that in the last few years the sector has been highly commercialised and somewhere lost its philanthropic connections. At present, the blood deficit rate is around 30-35 percent in the country and to add to this situation there is an evident gender disparity amongst blood donors as it has been noticed that around 90-95 percent of the donated blood is contributed by the male donors while women contribute to meagre 5-10 percent of the total donations.
In total, there are around 2500 blood banks in India out of which private banks are around 1500 and the rest are government blood banks. It has been observed during surveys that many people suffer from some or the other kind of taboo which impede blood donations for the needy. A sort of mental inertia prevails amongst the Indian people that blood donation would make them weak and have an adverse affect on their health. Major hindrances on the path of blood donation occur due to lack of awareness amongst ...
... people, especially those residing in the sub-urban and rural areas.
On the face of it, there is already a serious dearth of blood banks in many sub-urban and rural regions in India. At present, many private and governmental enterprises are supporting the growth of modern blood banks in rising sub-urban regions, but the initiatives do not seem to be enough as these regions still continue to get dependent on their immediate major cities or locations for finding uncommon blood groups or blood components. Suppose if we take an example of West Bengal, there are number blood banks in Durgapur, Siliguri, Purulia, Jalpaiguri, Medinipur, etc. Hence, small villages and rural areas situated around these regions would always have to get dependent on the bigger and more established townships no matter how seriously the person is blood-needy.
We can say that it is the duty of every healthy individual on this earth to donate their blood at regular time intervals. This is a basic fundamental duty which one should perform in order to save lives of his fellow beings on earth. Those who donate their blood are the unsung heroes who save the lives of many by voluntarily gifting the most precious element of life to mankind.
