Is A Time-lapse Camera Right For You?

Time lapse photography is beautiful and can be quite lucrative for professionals. Even hobbyists can make money on time lapse photography by selling their work freelance or taking commissions for time lapse photography. If you plan on making a living doing time-lapse photography, or if you have a passion for time-lapse photography that means you will want to keep doing this type of photography then buying a time-lapse camera just for photography might be a good investment. But if you are not sure what type of photography you want to do then you might be better off buying a camera that can take time-lapse photos but also can take other kinds of photos. Here are some questions to ask yourself to be sure that buying a dedicated time-lapse camera is the best choice for you.
How Much Experience Do You Have?
If you are not a very experienced photography you might not want to jump right into buying a camera. Buying a general purpose camera might be better so that you can learn how to take different kinds of photographs and still do some time lapse work. Then if you decide you want to specialize in time lapse photography ...
... you can buy another camera. But, if you have been taking photos for many years and you know that time-lapse photography is where your heart is then you shouldn’t wait to get a camera.
What Are You Going to Do With the Camera?
Are you going to be a hobby photographer or do you want to become a professional photographer? If you are going to try and break into professional photography you should invest in a high quality camera but if you are going to just take time lapse photos as a hobby you probably don’t need an expensive camera right away. If you are not sure what you want to do you might want to split the difference and get a mid level DLSR camera that can transition from hobby to professional if you decide to turn pro later on. DLSR cameras have come down in price quite a bit and are very affordable now.
What is Your Budget?
This is the question that no one really likes. Unfortunately most people can’t just buy a camera without any money constraints. You have to weigh how much camera you can afford to buy against what you want to do with the camera. For example, if you are going to use the camera to try and become a professional time lapse photographer it might may be worth investing in a high end camera. But, if your budget is tight and you are not going to try and become a professional photographer you might want to wait on the fancy camera. There are good Time-Lapse Cameras available in a huge range of prices. So once you have decided what your budget is you can search for a camera that will fit your price range.
