How To Record Pov Camera Movies Like A Pro
If you’re thinking about getting (or already have) a point of view (POV) camera), you probably got it because you’ve enjoyed seeing videos others have made with them. What you might not realize is that creating those fun, exciting videos could take more practice and planning than you thought. The good news is, it’s pretty easy to take great videos with this type of camera with just a bit of preparation.
The Perfect POV Mount
If you’re looking to take a video that’s from your own point of view, don’t make the mistake of mounting the camera directly on top of your head. At least, not the very first time you take it out. It can take a lot of practice to get POV filming from a helmet-top mount down. After all, your eyes aren’t on top of your head, are they? Instead consider mounting the camera to the front of the helmet (like a miner’s light), or even to the side. It’ll be that much easier to capture your actual POV, without having to do a ton of practice to make sure you’re not cutting the action off.
Multiple Mounting Options
Don’t forget—your camera can be fun mounted somewhere ...
... other than your head, even if you’re filming for point of view. Consider mounting it to your dashboard, for example, or to an RC car, or even to the end of a long pole to capture a top-down view of the action. Be creative; the camera doesn’t always have to be on the move, either. Because these cameras are typically waterproof and very sturdy, why not let it capture a close up of birds in your bird bath, or the fish in your aquarium?
Practice Plenty
Like pretty much anything else, practice makes perfect when it comes to filming with a POV camera. When you practice with your camera, you’ll learn how different mounts affect the filming, how the final video will look when taken from various distances, and how the camera reacts to different lighting conditions. All of this information can be invaluable when you want to make a video worth keeping of a significant event.
Plan Ahead
When you do head out with a particular video you want to make in mind, do a bit of preplanning. Test out different types, angles and positions of mounts in similar conditions. Scope the area out ahead of time if you can to get a good idea of what the lighting conditions will be like. Think about where you (and therefore the camera) will need to be, where you’ll need to move, and so on. Obviously you don’t need to plan every second, but a rough idea of what you want the finished video to be will help quite a bit when it comes to editing.
Editing
No expert that uses a POV camera skips this step. In order to capture the most spontaneous moments, you’ll always have to film some boring stuff. Editing lets you cut that stuff out.
