Pain Control Methods For Dental Treatments
Nervous patients have a difficult time going to the dentist for checkups or dental treatments. The fear of undergoing certain procedures in the dental clinic can lead to neglected dental health, because some individuals opt not to have their teeth checked, for fear of going through a fearful or painful experience. This avoidance of regular dental treatments or routine dental checkups can lead to even more serious dental problems, which can be more uncomfortable to treat.
Nervous patient options are now offered to patients who have a difficult time going to the dentist because of dental fear. These options make it possible for anxious patients to get the necessary treatment in a more comfortable manner. Nervous patient care options, such as conscious sedation, allow the patient to be unaware of any unpleasant parts of the treatment, so that he or she will not have a traumatic experience with the procedure.
One of the most common causes of dental anxiety is the fear of pain. Faced with the possibility of going through a painful procedure, a nervous patient will most likely do everything to avoid the dental treatment. ...
... Even just the idea of a painful procedure can be enough to start a panic attack on fearful patients. Innovations in the world of dentistry have helped in developing a number of pain management options, which are designed to make the patient experience very minimal to zero discomfort during dental treatments.
Pain Control Methods
Laser Drill – Using a laser drill during a dental treatment exposes the patient to significantly less pain compared to the traditional dental drill. The laser drill also eliminates the noise made by conventional drills, which can aggravate a patient’s anxiety level.
Topical Anesthesia – Topical anesthesia is used to numb the gums or the soft tissue of the inner mouth prior to the injection of the local anesthesia. The patient will feel less of the needle prick when the area is numbed beforehand with a topical anesthetic.
Electronic Anesthesia – Electrodes are used to direct electric current to the jaw, which numbs the area. This method can be used as an alternative to local anesthesia injections prior to a dental procedure.
Nitrous Oxide – Commonly referred to as “laughing gas”, this method is used to bring a patient to a completely relaxed, almost euphoric state of mind. Nitrous oxide is one of the most common pain control methods used in dental clinics.
Conscious Sedation – The sedative is administered through an IV line, placing the patient in a very relaxed state without the loss of consciousness throughout the procedure.
General Anesthesia – Used in cases when other pain control techniques are not sufficient to manage pain for a dental treatment. Under general anesthesia, the whole body is numbed, and the patient is put in a sleep state.
