As culture, technology and the human mind continue to evolve, develop and work together in perhaps the purest example of symbiosis, the effects are beginning to make themselves felt in the modern working environment. Offices are perhaps feeling the effects the most, as new systems and solutions are put into place to raise staff morale, company productivity and, ultimately, increased revenue for the business.

One of the most currently talked-about changes to the modern office environment is the recent theory, now a proven fact, of ‘Hot Desking’, a practice that could still be considered to be in its experimental stages as it only currently accounts for a small proportion of office environments. This is often due to the stubbornness and reluctance of managers of staid and relatively-secure companies to invest in the future; and this behaviour still after official, independent studies have already shown dramatically-positive results in the offices in which hot desking systems and other modern ideas have been tried in.

The system involves an office having more workstations than there are employees, in an attempt to reduce the shocking official survey figure that states that around 30% of an employee’s working day is spent elsewhere than at their desk. Put simply, this is unnecessarily wasted time and space, which are two of the most valuable commodities for any business.

The old adage that claims ‘Time is Money’ is very true though could perhaps have been modified slightly to include the extra advice that says ‘Space AND time are Money!’ - hot desking systems can create a dramatic increase in office space which can be used in many ways; adding space-efficient cell pods, breakout spaces that are ideal for informal collaborative interactions between employees and quiet, relaxed areas conducive to creative thinking are all great uses of extra space, though conversely it has been shown that simply having more room to move freely about between workstations and other areas has a powerful effect at reducing the stress levels of employees who work in busier, more crowded environments.
